USAY was recently featured in the special project Tracing Threads, by the Pigeon, a news publication launched in July 2020 by a group of student journalists and graduates. The article talks about how reconciliation could be spearheaded by changes in education, specifically by closing the education gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth, and by incorporating Indigenous cultural education into existing frameworks. OPPORTUNITY ALERT: What: Free webinar featuring a film screening, presentation of learning guide and panel of child welfare professionals When: November 24, 11am - 1pm Mountain Time... Where: Online. Register for free: https://onlinexperiences.com/scripts/Server.nxp Event Details: (Dis)placed: Indigenous Youth and the Child Welfare System features the voices of Indigenous youth as they reflect on their prior involvement with the child welfare system and their multiple strategies of resistance to assimilation. The Learning Guide provides the historical and contemporary contexts for the overwhelming number of Indigenous children in the child welfare system, and encourages professionals to identify actions they can take to help end the inequities and ongoing discrimination, and contribute to the thriving of Indigenous children and youth. After a screening of the film, we will introduce participants to the learning guide, and panel members with professional experience in child welfare, post-secondary education and working with Indigenous people directly impacted by the child welfare system will describe how they use the film and learning guide in their practice. Participants will be invited to submit questions to contribute to the discussion.
