What do you know about Saskatchewan’s provincial bird? The Sharp-tailed Grouse is a fascinating creature that lives in the Northeast Swale (among other places a...cross Saskatchewan). In the spring months, they can be found dancing on the lek, which is an open area of grassy vegetation where they display and engage in courtship behaviour. Check out this awesome video to see it in action: https://youtu.be/-EFlJSqhbDM The Sharp-tailed Grouse relies on a variety of different habitats throughout the year: short vegetation for feeding & dancing, and shrubby vegetation for nesting & concealment. The area needs to be big and varied enough, which is why the Northeast Swale is so important! Further fragmentation of this conservation area could lead to habitat loss for the Grouse and other animals that live in the Swale. Here are some Grouse prints in the snow, thanks to Meghan Mickelson. #yxe #SaveTheSwales #swaleSaturday
