WHAT IS DEPRESSION? Depression is the experience of feeling sad and down for a long period of time, to the point of feeling hopeless, helpless and worthless. Depression can interfere with everything, including school, family, and relationships. But getting help early can promote full recovery and let the person get back to being them self. Remember, depression is a medical illness that affects the brain and hormones. A sad mood is a symptom of this illness. Depression is no...t a personal weakness. If someone is experiencing depression, it’s not their fault. And it’s very real. The sooner they get some help, the better. (CMHA, Ontario) https://ontario.cmha.ca//understanding-and-finding-help-f/ Why am I depressed? Understanding your depressed mood is important. Your recovery efforts can target the factors that you see as contributing to, and maintaining, your depression. Remember depression can happen due to many reasons including genetics. You are not lazy or unmotivated ore crazy for feeling symptoms of depression. Consider the following: Gender Heredity: Do you have relatives who experience depressed mood? Biology: Do you have a chronic medical problem? Age: Are you between the ages of 18 and 44? History of Depression: Have you experienced depressed mood in the past? Substance Abuse: Do you use alcohol or drugs to cope with life’s problems? Anxiety: Does anxiety interfere with your life? Relationship Conflict: Are you experiencing conflict in an important relationship? Early Loss: Did you experience a significant loss at an early age? Stressful Life Events: Have you experienced stressful situations in the past? Negative Self-talk: Do you put yourself down or say negative things to yourself? Avoiding Feelings: Do you tend to avoid identifying and expressing how you feel? Lack of Social Support: Are you without enough emotional support in your life? Lack of Purpose and Goals: Do you have goals for the future and feel you can contribute? Poor Self-care: o Do you have difficulty eating regular, well-balanced meals? o Do you have difficulty maintaining a regular sleep routine? o Do you encounter difficulty exercising regularly? It's okay to ask for help When you are struggling with your mental health, it is okay to say you are not okay. The social pressure of being seen as different or crazy often lead people not to seek help for mental health. But de-stigmatizing can start with one individual. When we have a broken arm, we go to the doctor, why can’t it be the same for mental health? Nobody asked to get their arm broken and it is not their fault it happened. What some people often hear from oth...ers is someone has it worse than you. Saying that can make a person feel invalidated and embarrassed. It makes it seem like they are ‘complaining. While it is great to acknowledge the problems around you, if you break an arm and someone tells you well that person broke two, stop complaining, regardless of that person’s pain, you are still feeling your own. It is important to know that your feelings and experiences are individual to you and they matter. . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #stigma #addiction #healing #harmreduction #recovery #socialdeterminantsofhealth #mentalwellness #substanceabuse #stigma#usask #ussu #universityofsaskatchewan #uofs #roadtorecovery #help #support #mentalillness #addictionawareness #love #spreadpositivity

These social and economic conditions are called the social determinants of health and are some of the most important factors that impact on mental and physical health. Research shows that the social determinants can be more important than health care or lifestyle choices in infl...uencing health (Mikkonen and Raphael 2010).- Canada Mental Health Association, Ontario https://ontario.cmha.ca/provincial-pol/social-determinants/ . . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #stigma #addiction #healing #harmreduction #recovery #socialdeterminantsofhealth #mentalwellness #substanceabuse #stigma#usask #ussu #universityofsaskatchewan #uofs #roadtorecovery #help #support #mentalillness #addictionawareness #love #spreadpositivity
