This past Thanksgiving Weekend-our family took the time to just be-enjoy the beautiful weather, hear the sounds of the geese flying south, feel the crunch of leaves beneath our feet, and enjoy the soothing rich flavor of our Spiced Orange Pekoe. As the vulnerabilities in all of us rise to the surface during this Pandemic, so too does the pain. We are seeing, more than any other time in our history, the need for accountability. One see's it all over the world, whether it the riots in Hong Kong, Tamil Tea Pluckers in Sri Lanka, the discrimination in Myanmar, the Indigenous people of Canada, or the need to actually say "Black Lives Matter" STILL in 2020, it brings to mind that we all must check our thoughts at the doo...r before we speak or act. The fact that prejudice becomes inherent within us BECAUSE of what we are taught (or not taught) within a society, speaks volumes. As a Canadian, going to Sri Lanka and joining my husband's family tea estates I saw discrimination against women and against Tamil Tea Pluckers daily. It became our mission to make a difference by "teaching" by example. The Mother's Wish Foundation was formed at our Royal Ceylon Tea Company, est.1885-to empower women, ensure that all women tea pluckers would collect their own paycheque, (not their husbands), that every worker is addressed in their own language and that all workers were insured because our workers lives matter! That is why we are so proud of our products. Every tin of tea holds 200 grams of tea that has been "handpicked" not machine harvested. That means that every one of tea pluckers (mainly women) pluck several kilos of tea leaf for every tin. This is no ordinary tea and our Tea Pluckers at the Royal Ceylon Tea Company are no ordinary ladies!
