Hi everyone, We just had our first meeting of the year last night! Thanks to everyone who came out. Heres a list of the things we covered, though Im sure I may be missing some. Feel free ask questions/add to anything I missed.... -weekly/biweekly meetings for food and drinks: We mentioned wanting to get together at a place like Bin 4 just for socializing, though no dates/times have been set yet. All you can eat sushi and cheap wings at plutos was also mentioned. We may throw up a poll soon to see when/where works best for people. -registering as a club under the BCPA - A lot of us compete/would like to compete, and we thought it would be cool to be recognized as a club through the BCPA. This would help us for exposure, as well as help those who are interested become more involved in the sport of powerlifting. -Group meeting/weightlifting on campus - most of us either lift alone or if we do train together its mostly coincidental - we discussed having a more organized method of either training together, or better ways of communication through something like a facebook messenger group so we can easily get ahold of other people for spots, form checks, and so on. -coaching/biweekly topic meetings - this was brought up after the meeting with the idea of having a topic of the day where a knowledgeable member of the club could take about this specific topic, and/or we could all discuss things related to this topic. An example of this could be: programming styles, preventing injury, squat technique, or maybe even more hands on sessions, such as learning the clean and jerk. -t shirts and gear - We have the ability of bringing in clothing to represent out club, and wanted to see if members would be interested in this. If you are, let us know! -meeting others & getting to know what members want to see and expect out of the club. Overall this was generally an informal meeting where we wanted to see what members wanted to get out of the club - We have members relatively new to the club to members who have been training for a long time, and are reaching totals near national/international competitive levels. All of us are beginners at running a club, but we all are passionate about weightlifting and powerlifting, and helping to improve others and getting to know people with similar goals and passions is a big part of why we are doing this in the first place. -UWPC

Right after competing at the US Open, at IPL European Championships Yury Belkin re-attempts a 410kg (903.8 lbs) deadlift to break Ed Coans previous record. I would also like to add that this is beltless. Yury attempted this at the US Open for his 3rd attempt but ended up failing just off the floor. Whos planning on pulling heavy today? And what are your current deadlift goals?... -Alex

Hey everyone, Club is still on hiatus but I thought Id take a moment and appreciate some excellent lifts by female lifters Ive seen recently. With the Arnold beginning tomorrow there will be some amazing lifting, both female and male, to watch for anyone interested. I thought it a prudent time to make a post right before, as you can expect many world records to be broken. Here are 6 awesome lifters, performing 2 squats, 2 benchs and 2 deadlifts.... Squats -------------- These first two lifters both weigh under 72 kg / 159 lb body weight. I believe these lifts are both from today. Katie Anne hitting a 4 plate / 405 lb squat for a nice single https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ9PNXjgstF/ And Isabella Weissenberg who is the Europe champ smoking a 405 lb / 4 plate squat for three triples. https://www.instagram.com/p/BRG2nY7BEIz/ Bench -------------- Here is Daener-- I mean Swoleesi pausing a 171 lb pause bench at 121 lb body weight. This video is a bit older but I thought I should include a younger girl benching some serious weight. https://www.instagram.com/p/BMpK-YmDXrB/?taken-by=swoleesi Of course no lifting compilation is complete without one of, if not THE best bencher in the world. Jennifer Thompson, who only weighs 132 lb, is in her 40s, benching a whopping 325 lb. Yes you read that right. 325 lb @ 132 lb body weight. Id like to see that done by anyone at that body weight in person. https://www.instagram.com/p/BP5X2Z7BNik/ Deadlifts -------------- Here is Marisa Inda, a Juggernaut athlete, the american record holder, at ONLY 114 lb body weight, pulling 365 lb x4. https://www.instagram.com/p/BPasiW2jZb7/?taken-by=marisainda Lastly, heres everyones strongstrongfriend MegSquats, who if you dont know by now dyel bro? Shes smoking 290 lb x 13 on deadlifts, she has also hit 407 lb for a single. Body weight: 63 kg / 139 lb https://www.instagram.com/p/BPll1rwFbi4/?taken-by=megsquats I hope these motivated you whether youre a man or a woman. Maybe gave you someone to follow on Instagram. Have a good rest of term! Train hard, study harder. -Soroush

UVic Weightlifting and Powerlifting Club 10.03.2020

Hi everyone, This term we couldnt find anyone who wanted to organize and deal with club events and proceedings. So as of this term, the UW&PC will be inactive indefinitely. We may have someone who would want to take up the mantle for the fall term, and if anyone else is interested please P.M. this page, but as of today, the last day to submit clubs, the club is closed. The page may be updated every now and then to maintain a sense of community till it can be re-opened. Thanks, Soroush

Hey everyone! I hope everyones training is going well leading into finals, whether you have them or not. This post is going to be more health and fitness than strength related, however I believe its invaluable information for anyone trying to lose weight, or attempting to have a sensible conversation with other people in the fitness community. I was lucky enough to learn this during my biochemistry degree, but not everyone will have that chance. Layne Norton, who many of... you will recognize, lays out some facts on the different artificial sweeteners. A must listen for the fitness layman in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dod6bUZYz4w Remember to always do your research. Even on someone such as Dr. Nortons videos. For example, I may agree with most of his videos, but that doesnt mean I have to or do with all of them. On this particular subject Ive previously learned, and understand the chemistry behind it, however on other subjects I may have to look at the supporting evidence. Always strive to educate and better yourself, because you can and, whether you like to or not, will influence others. I hope exams go well and remember as usual, train hard, study harder. -Soroush

Update on club status! Most previous head members who you would see or talk to at CARSA have either graduated, taken time off from school or are on work leave. (Me included). At the moment, for the sake of having a lifting community to recognize with at CARSA, the club has been renewed for the term by Tarn, so if you run into him there be sure to give him a hi. If you would like to help him with ideas or you have any in mind yourself let us know. We can still do form or tec...hnique checks, programming help or general aid for getting started, however they might have to be over message rather than in person for the time being if you want a more experienced opinion. Thanks, and have a great term everyone. -Soroush See more

Are you experiencing lower back pain(LBP)? This pain can actually be attributed to a many different causes! One quick google search of the anatomy of the lower back may leave you queasy with information overload. Dont worry.. Ive done some research for you. One common problem area implicated in LBP is the Sacroiliac joint (SIJ)(saco- sacrum; iliac- ilium). Your sacrum is the bone that attaches your pelvis and the bottom of your spine, supporting both the spine and the rest ...of your upper body. The ilium attaches to the sacrum and houses the acetabulum (the socket in which the head of the femur sits, aka your hip joint). Over time, while under load, the SIJ can become lax, leading to pain or irritation. How can we fix this? A weakness in one muscle group in particular has been implicated in this laxity. The abs! However, its not what you think, its only weakness in the transverses abdominis (TA), the deepest abdominal muscle, that is commonly implicated in LBP. The TA is the most commonly neglected abdominal muscle, and its sole purpose (as it fires independent of the obliques and rectus abdominis) is to stiffen the lumbar spine during sudden movements and during preparation for movements that involve a stiff solid kinetic chain. Knowing the role of the TA has implications not only for LBP but also for efficient biomechanics during proper lifting technique. Learning to properly activate the TA is a component of training every athlete, weekend warrior, and beginner should not ignore. To feel what its like to activate your TA, simply cough. The tightness you feel in your abdomen is your TA contracting. Another way to activate it is to imagine pulling your bellybutton in towards your spine. When you do this your TA should activate while your other abdominal muscles remain minimally active. Try the TA exercise below to help as well as remember these cues the next time you squat or deadlift (or even walk!) to improve your biomechanics and alleviate some of your LBP! Happy lifting, Radek https://youtu.be/_EgIRJzRz-o

Hey everyone! Rad and I (Soroush) have been busy the past few months trying to get a club shirt designed. After many, many iterations we finally have one were happy with. The first set printed will be free on a first come first serve basis (till we run out of shirts). The shirts will be high quality polyester so you can wear it in and out of the gym. Were doing this to help grow the club and the community for years to come. We now leave it up to you, the members, to vote fo...r which color combination we use for the first set of shirts. Here are the designs (4 color combinations, back and front of shirt): http://imgur.com/a/EPAwD You can vote here: http://strawpoll.me/7410220 Thanks, Soroush P.S. Message us with your size, if you havent already spoken to us in person. Once again, its till we run out.

If you were feeling weak before... a motivating story for everyone. This 78 year old lady can deadlift 245lbs and competed at a powerlifting meet. Shes only been lifting for 2 years! "When I first started, if I was on the floor, I couldnt even get up without the help of a chair or someone to help me up, Webb told ABC. And the stairs? I could barely get up holding onto the railing. ... I hope my story encourages others to want to do the same. You dont have to go and lift 200 pounds, but anyone - no matter what age - can go out there and work out. I promise you, you will feel great." Hopefully this reminds you of your parents or grandparents and generates in you some motivation to help them get in shape and live an easier life as they get older. So they can "go up the stairs" without help. So they can "get up without the help of a chair or someone".
