Are you volunteering instead of working this summer? You might be eligible for a grant to offset post-secondary education costs in the fall. https://www.cbc.ca//politi/student-grant-trudeau-1.5626475

I cannot speak to your individual reactions to the images that emerged from Minnesota last week. I can tell you that my heart was outraged, my spirit deflated, but my resolve is strengthened. The death of Mr. Floyd is the most recent example of the systematic and pervasive abuse of blacks and other minorities in the United States, Canada, and abroad. As you may be aware the Canadian Association of Physicists has suspended activities today and has sanctioned a strike to ...voice opposition to black racism and racism of all forms in academia. I encourage you to respond guided by your conscience. Whether in quiet contemplation, open dialog, signing the CAP petition, or striking, I support you. Should you choose to strike today, the department will respect your action. As physicists we have great power to change the world to be freer, more tolerant, and more prosperous. We do this through the problems we choose and actions we take. However you choose to act, follow your conscience guided by the spirit of freedom of thought, word, and deed. I intend to participate in the strike by setting aside physics for a day to contemplate steps we can take to become a more tolerant and inclusive department. Thank you. With warm regards, Brian Brian McNamara University Research Chair Chair Department of Physics & Astronomy University of Waterloo
