One of UWindsor’s psychology professors, Dr. Lance Rappaport, is leading a study to assess the effectiveness of a smartphone app to manage anxiety. . . Dr. Rappaport heads a team of researchers assessing MindShift, a free tool developed by experts at Anxiety Canada to help people manage psychological distress. The app has been freely available for several years, but the group of mental health professionals now want to evaluate how well it’s working. The goal is to expand the ...app’s reach and develop it further. . . Participants must be at least 18 years of age and located in Canada or the United States. They have to be comfortable enough with the English language to complete study questionnaires and they must have access to an iOS or Android smartphone or mobile device with access to the Internet. People who take part in the study can receive up to $95 in gift certificates for their participation. . . For more information visit Anxiety Canada’s Mindshift research page or visit https://www.uwindsor.ca//2020-/feeling-anxious-theres-app See more

Check out this article featuring UWindsors Lancer Recovery program that was created by our own faculty member, Dr. Onawa LaBelle! The recovery program is taking part in the #RecoveryRocks project! Psychology professor Onawa LaBelle founded Lancers Recover as a supportive environment of peers to reinforce any students decision to abstain from alcohol or drugs. She hopes the public placement of the rocks will serve as an awareness campaign to reduce stigma and let people af...fected by substance use disorder know there is help available. Messages that members contributed include: It works if you work it, Keep coming back, and Recovery is a journey, not a destination. For the students in the Lancers Recover program, this is an opportunity to express themselves artistically, do service work related to awareness about recovery, work collaboratively as a team, and get outside for some social connection all while staying safe during COVID-19, Dr LaBelle says. Dr. Dana Mnard spoke with CBC about the recent research of nurse experiences during the pandemic and the impact it has had! When the pandemic hit and Detroit became a hotspot I was thinking, oh these people Ive worked with, that I was very close with at the time, how are they coping? This must be so difficult for them, said Dana Menard, researcher and University of Windsor assistant professor. The study revealed two dimensions, of the community response to nurses ...during this time, Menard explained. She said while some nurses felt supported by free meals, nightly clapping and singing, and car parades, others felt stigmatized as potential carriers. The research was completed by Dr. Jody Ralph (Faculty of Nursing), Dr. Dana Mnard (Dept. of Psychology, Adult Clinical), Dr. Kendall Soucie (Dept. of Psychology, Child Clinical), and Dr. Laurie A. Freeman (Faculty of Nursing). Check out the article here:

The research in this article was done by Dr. Jody Ralph (Faculty of Nursing), Dr. Dana Mnard (Dept. of Psychology, Adult Clinical), Dr. Kendall Soucie (Dept. of Psychology, Child Clinical), and Dr. Laurie A. Freeman (Faculty of Nursing). Nurses consistently reported increased mental health concerns, difficulties coping and substantial dissatisfaction with the level of support provided by their hospitals. The support that nurses felt from their organization and managers varied from workplace to workplace and unit to unit. A few felt well supported, but many reported they were not valued, citing organizations that furloughed them, stopped employer contributions to retirement funds or did not provide adequate PPE
