PRCTICE UPDATE - April 24, 2020 ---------------------------------- To our valued patients and community: First and foremost, thank you all for your continued patience during this difficult time. Its certainly been a big adjustment for everyone, patients and team members alike, not knowing when we can all get back into the office to provide regular dental care.... In response to Ontarios announcement regarding the extension of its State of Emergency and the closure of all non-essential services to May 12, 2020, we have had to reschedule all non-essential patient appointments leading up to this date. Additionally, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) has now somewhat expanded our scope of treatment to include not only those experiencing dental emergencies, but also those requiring urgent care. For more information as to what constitutes urgent care, please visit the RCDSOs guidance here: https://www.rcdso.org//covid-19---guidance-on-emergency-an I am currently still triaging dental emergencies as best as I can over the phone and via email. For situations that cannot be addressed remotely, an in-person assessment may be required as long as it fulfills the criteria set out by the RCDSO in the guidance above. Our provincial government is expected to provide some plans for a staged re-opening of businesses this upcoming week. We are starting to see this happen in other provinces like Saskatchewan where dentists are expected to re-open on May 4. There are still many uncertainties about how this will happen and how the current emergency/urgent care guidelines will be affected we will let you know as soon as we learn of updated recommendations from Ontario Public Health and the RCDSO. In the meantime, we are gearing up and making preparations within our office to help protect our patients and our team members. These include the installation of sneeze guards at the front desk, securing enhanced personal protective equipment, and spacing out patient appointments to minimize foot traffic in the office as you know, the health and safety of our patients, team members, and our community are our highest priorities. PRACTICE UPDATE (COVID-19) - March 26, 2020 -------------------------------------------------------------------- To our valued patients and community:... We hope you all are keeping well and staying safe. Since our last update, the Ontario government has declared a state of emergency and has mandated the shutdown of all non-essential businesses in order to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Dental offices providing emergency care have been permitted to remain open. In light of this development, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) has maintained its strong recommendation that although emergency dental treatments should continue, all non-essential and elective dental services should be suspended until the state of emergency has been lifted. You can find out more about the RCDSOs updates and recommendations here: https://www.rcdso.org//rcdso-members/2019-novel-coronavirus In response to these recent developments, we will unfortunately need to reschedule all non-essential and elective appointments up to and including April 9th, 2020. Our team will be contacting all patients who need to be rescheduled within the next few days. My own period of self-isolation due to my recent travel abroad will come to an end on March 29. Thank you everyone for your well wishes and kind words; I feel healthy and have had no symptoms throughout this period. If nothing changes, once my self-isolation period ends I aim to be available to treat dental emergencies on a case-by-case basis as per RCDSO recommendations (see here for the RCDSOs guidance on emergency situations: https://www.rcdso.org//rcd/dispatch-magazine/articles/5288). Please keep in mind that the RCDSO is very specific in its definition of a true emergency situation (i.e. oral-facial trauma, significant infection, prolonged bleeding or pain which cannot be managed by over-the-counter medications) and as such, most situations will likely be managed remotely to the best of our ability. I understand that this has been and continues to be a frustrating and challenging time for everyone, and while we here at Uxbridge Family Dentistry are all eager to get back to doing what we do best - helping our patients it is imperative that we prioritize the health and safety of our team, our patients, and our community above all else. This afternoon, our governing body, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), issued a public notice strongly recommending that all non-essential and elective dental services be suspended immediately. You can read more about the RCDSOs annoucement here: https://www.rcdso.org//rcd/dispatch-magazine/articles/5286. Additionally, I have just returned home from an international continuing education course. While the location of the course was not in a high-risk area and I do not exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19, I will be self-isolating for the next 14 days in accordance with the Government of Canadas requirements. As you know, our top priorities at Uxbridge Family Dentistry have always been the health and safety of our team, our patients, and our community. As such, we have made the necessary decision to close our office effective immediately for the next two weeks and all appointments relating to non-essential and elective services will be rescheduled. We will be contacting all patients who need to be rescheduled within the next few days. Our practice will open specifically for emergency treatments on Monday, March 23 (patients will be seen by Dr. Ho). I anticipate that I will be back in the office on Monday, March 30 after I conclude my self-isolation period. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult period.
