Our workshop elves have been very busy finishing prosthetic sockets before we close down for two weeks... and who does not like a sense of humour and a splash of colour?
COVID19 Update - PLEASE READ Both locations are currently open by appointment only. We have posted the following at both clinics, and ask that patients review the changes in advance of their appointments: - It is critical that you reschedule your appointment if you are not well (in any way), if you have recently traveled, if you have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed, or if you are awaiting tests results.... - Only one patient at a time will be allowed in per clinician, and patients should enter the clinic alone, except those that need assistance for safety - Masks are required for your appointment - If our staff inform you that they are not quite ready for you yet, please do not wait at the door - leave at least 6ft of space for those leaving the clinic, and staff will inform you when it is safe to come in - Please do not unnecessarily touch any surfaces, chairs, or products We are taking every precaution possible to protect our patients and staff and we appreciate your cooperation. Individuals that are not adhering to the safety protocols will be asked to leave.
The 2020 theme ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ focuses on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others. #notlessjustdifferent #InternationalDayOfPeopleWithDisability #mobilitymatters #limbdifferenceawareness
We have a soft spot for our animal amputees... including Peter, who lives at Happy Tales Animal Sanctuary near Harrowsmith, ON. We now have their 2021 calendars for sale at both our clinics in Kingston. Peter is featured on the May page - as we first met him in May 2019! All proceeds go directly to Happy Tales - $25 each (Cash only). #supportlocal #animalamputees #differentnotless #givingback Happy Tales Animal Sanctuary/CCWR
Just had to share this!
In the spirit of giving thanks, we wanted to share this letter written by OPC President, Jesse Cornell: a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated prosthetic and orthotic professionals for their commitment as healthcare providers and essential workers throughout the last few months. And thank you to our patients for their patience during this time, as we all adjusted! Happy Thanksgiving! Interesting information regarding the prosthesis Terry Fox used 40 years ago! "In 1980, Terry Fox ran 5,373 km ...using a prosthesis designed primarily for walking. ... It also motivated researchers to develop prostheses better suited for running. Since 1980, developments in materials manufacturing and computer/bionic technology have led to more comfortable, stable and responsive prostheses, both for recreational and elite athletes." https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca//terry-fox-and-the-
Jack has recently had some skin breakdown on his stump, which became infected. Thanks to the great care he received from Millcreek Veterinary Clinic, daily dressing changes & antibiotics hidden in tiny cheeseballs (Sorry, Dr Amy! We will work on his weight loss again soon!) he is completely healed. Jack was casted for a new prosthesis yesterday... As with human amputees, stump changes happen over time and making sure he has a socket that fits him well is an ongoing process. Luckily Jack has AJ.
A heartwarming story to share to start the long weekend! Lilly has been on a long road of recovery to get to this point, and we are very excited for her. The Rotten Rotties #animalamputee #notlessjustdifferent
