Amazing Things You Didn’t Know About the Great Blue Hole - The Great Blue Hole is 60 miles from mainland Belize. To access it, you must travel by boat from isla...nds and port cities that are more than an hour and a half away by boat. It’s isolated and remote, but it draws dozens of curious observers every day. It’s big enough to hold two giant airliners. - The Great Blue Hole is a part of the Belize Barrier Reef System. When you travel to snorkel or dive the Great Blue Hole, you won’t be disappointed to know what you’ll have plenty of other dive sites along the way. That’s because the Blue Hole is part of a larger reef system, which is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hole itself lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, an atoll that is the easternmost part of the barrier reef system. - The Great Blue Hole was once a cave. Sinkholes, or cenotes as they’re called in Belize and the Caribbean, pepper the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize. The Blue Hole is a sinkhole formed by the collapse of a large limestone cave sometime after the last glacial period. Rising water filled the cave, causing it to collapse in on itself. #REMAX1stChoiceBelize #REMAXRealEstateBelize #InvestInBelize #CarribeanCapitalGroup See more
Fun Facts About Placencia, Belize - Placencia is 16 miles of natural beachside beauty Located at the southern tip of Belize, Placencia is a pristine peninsula w...ith an incredible 16 miles of natural sandy beach to its name. A lagoon with a mangrove perimeter, lush green rainforest, twisting rivers and cayes encircled by coral reefs all add to its natural splendor. Cut off from the rest of Belize, it’s peaceful, tranquil and relatively untouched. - Placencia is an incredible spot for whale shark viewing The world’s second largest reef is just off the coast of Placencia, and the nearby waters are teeming with astonishing aquatic life. Just 30 miles away, Gladden Spit is a major tropical fish spawning site over the months of May June, drawing the attention of whale sharks. Time it right, and you can scuba dive and snorkel with the world’s largest fish. - Placencia owes much of its prosperity to a hurricane In 2001 Hurricane Iris shook up much of Belize, with Placencia taking the brunt of the destruction. An estimated 95% of buildings were damaged, with Placencia’s famous boardwalk covered over by fallen structures. However, rebuilding initiatives and developer investment brought the peninsula back to its glory days and beyond. Placencia has since become one of Belize’s most popular tourism destinations. #REMAX1stChoiceBelize #REMAXRealEstateBelize #InvestInBelize #CarribeanCapitalGroup
