Dental offices in Nova Scotia will be authorized starting June 5 to provide emergency and urgent dental treatment in their clinics. While dental offices have always followed strict infection control guidelines, they will be following additional protocols identified by the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia and in collaboration with Public Health. What’s the difference between emergency, urgent, and non-urgent dental treatment? Dental emergency: potentially life-threatenin...g conditions which require immediate treatment. Urgent dental care: conditions that require immediate attention to relieve severe pain and/or risk of infection. Non-urgent dental care: includes regular check-ups and hygiene appointments and are not to be performed until June 19. Dentists will be able to provide all dental procedures starting on June 19. As was announced on May 27th by the province of Nova Scotia, effective June 5th we will be able to open our office to provide emergency or urgent dental care. Emergency care includes a dental infection with swelling, pain that cannot be controlled with medication, trauma or bleeding. Urgent dental care includes severe dental and facial pain, trauma, tooth fracture, final crown or bridge delivery if the temporary restoration has been lost or broken and is causing issues, pro...sthetics adjustments or repairs if function is impeded, and similar issues. Non-urgent care is scheduled to be allowed to begin June 19th. As it was during the mandated quarantine, if you have a dental emergency and need emergency or urgent dental care, please call the office and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Please understand that even though we are allowed to re-open June 5th it will at first be for emergency and urgent care only until June 19th. This is mandated by the province and our dental board. Also, there is a shortage and a difficulty obtaining the correct personal protective equipment needed that has been a global issue. We are doing our best to gather the equipment needed and to prepare our office to be able to open and function safely and according to our regulations. To the patients that we have had to reschedule and the patients that have been waiting for us to re-open, we thank you for your patience and understanding. Due to the recent and rapid spread of COVID-19, the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia has advised that all dental practices suspend non-elective or non-essential treatment, and provide emergency care only. We will be following these recommendations effective immediately and will be cancelling all non-essential appointments. Once we know more about timing, scheduling, and get new recommendations from our governing body we will then be able to reschedule appointments an...d treatment.
