Behind every great community are individuals that work hard to make their town a great place to live. Some of you may not know the faces or stories that belong ...to these amazing individuals, so, the Town of Renfrew will be highlighting local business owners and/or their employees. Today's feature is on Sheila Kemp, the current owner of Aikenhead's Drug Store. Here is Sheila's story: "I was born and raised in Renfrew and graduated as a pharmacist from the University of Toronto in 1982. I started working at Aikenhead’s Drug Store in 1998 and was given the opportunity to purchase the store in 1999 when Neil and Millie Ritchie were planning their retirement. It was an IDA store at that time and after researching the banners available I joined PharmaChoice. It was a new banner that originated in Nova Scotia consisting of only 65 stores at that time. It was an excellent business decision and I serve as a member of their Board of Directors. PharmaChoice is now the fastest growing banner in Canada and has over 900 stores currently. My goal has always been to make Aikenhead’s the best pharmacy in town and to provide exceptional patient care. Our dispensary and front store staff are outstanding and I regularly receive compliments about their exceptional service. I encourage and support education for all staff to improve their ability to help our patients. During the early stages of Covid-19, we were proactive in sourcing masks for our staff and customers as well as donating masks to RVH. When sanitizer was unavailable we manufactured it in our compounding lab and donated the proceeds to local charities. I believe that it is important for businesses to give back to the community that supports them. In addition to the national PharmaChoice Board, I also volunteer as a Board member for the Bonnechere Manor Foundation and the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation. We sell break-open tickets and Catch the Ace tickets supporting the hospital and sell fundraising tickets and/or donate prizes for various events. I have had a very rewarding career thus far and was chosen as Ontario Pharmacists’ Association Pharmacist of the Year as well as the Wyeth Bowl of Hygeia Award for community service in 2009." The Town of Renfrew is so lucky to have Sheila Kemp and Aikenheads Drug Store in our community. Stay tuned for more features on local business owners!

With Remembrance Day around the corner, I find myself being asked "How and Why?" ... a lot. There is a simple answer I can give you, and a slightly complex one.... The complex answer is that a combat soldier will do whatever they feel they have to do to survive to the end of combat and return to whatever they are fighting for. Many times it changes who we are to the point that our loved ones don't recognize us as the individual who left. At the end of the day, I've done what I felt I had to to get back to my family and life that I was serving to protect. The easier answer is actually a little unfair. You get lucky. No matter how well you keep low, no matter how diligent you are to keep your weapon at high ready, or your head on a swivel, no matter how determined you are to go home, sometimes shit happens. Shrapnel doesn't care who you have waiting at home. An IED doesn't care how well maintained your equipment is, or how good a shot you are. A bullet doesn't ask you how many times you've survived breaching a building to clear a room in a HOSTILE environment. I cannot honestly say I am the most deserved person to come home, and I didn't manage without my own scars. But there are some friends I wish could raise a glass with me who weren't any less prepared or careful than I was. Combat isn't fair. The 2020 POPPY Campaign launches Friday (Oct 30th), please wear a Poppy in remembrance of our men and woman in uniform who gave the ultimate sacrifice, life and limb and for those who have been spiritually and mentally broken. ~ MCpl (Ret) Mike Trauner MMV, SM, CD 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment

BIG NEWS We’ve been working hard to get an ice surface ready for the holidays and we’ve succeeded!!! Our outdoor ice season starts tomorrow! ... This year’s skating oval is near Ma-te-Way Activity Centre. If you’ve been to Lindsay Field or ran around the track- you’ll know where to go! Some may wonder why we moved the oval. When we asked for feedback after the first season, we heard people would like to use the oval at night. Our previous location had no power nearby so we moved the oval! We’re hoping to be able to light up the oval this year.

Good day, everybody! Our landlord has erected a for sale sign on the property, but for the record, it is still business as usual here at the deli. Last year we... gave our notice that we would not be renewing our lease this coming spring. So, this is in response to the impending vacancy this coming March. But, we are still going full steam ahead until our lease is up at the end of Febuary. Now, you have the story from the horses mouth...Hope to see you all in over the fall and winter.. thanks again for all of the support! See more
