Courage, tenacity and resilience are three qualities the sport of figure skating promotes. Enjoy this '10-minute choreography' some of our Intermediate and Senior/Master skaters quickly learned to express the importance of always rising up to life's challenges:)!!

We are also grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and provide programs that promote physical and mental well-being...and we hope to revive some of the programs in the New Year that had to be put on hold this fall, such as Power Skating and Adult CanSkate:)!! Happy Thanksgiving from our skating family to yours!!

Researchers at the University of Alberta have created a 3-D model to analyze the movements of figure skating...and they have more studies in store!! Technology will continue to help us train and move more effectively on the ice...and could potentially be used as a judging tool in decades to come (tracking speed, height and distance of jumps, etc, to provide quantifiable measures in our sport beyond number of rotations)!!!! You can click on a link at the end of the article to see the study -- and if anyone can follow it, hats off to you;)!!
Thursday Halloween CanSkate. Happy Halloween everyone!
Yipppeee!!!! A new season of CBC's Battle of the Blades is starting on October 15th!! They are looking for 'virtual audience' members who are super fans of the show -- it's easy to apply, just write a quick email...see details below:)!!
We are excited to announce a return to Patch! Close to a quarter century ago, Skate Canada followed other skating organizations around the world and eliminated the skating of figure eights, or school figures, from being one of our sport's disciplines. Until then, skaters had faithfully and quietly skated around and around on circles using all of the edges and turns on a session commonly called "Patch", developing their edge and body awareness and alignment through focus and repetition. Now, with circle-on-circle exercises and turns in isolation using 'figure form' on all of the Skating Skills assessments, we've started skating short Patch sessions a few times a week!!
Congratulations to Hayley on this Axel and the others landed right before it:)!! This is figure skating's only forward-facing jump take-off, and a feeling like no other -- with the best feeling of all...a successful landing!!!! Although on this landing there's a little hop, she has achieved the required rotation, and if you slow down the video, you'll see the hop helps her absorb the momentum of the jump. The Axel is a tricky balance of many forces, and on this attempt, Hayley was adding speed, and demonstrates great instincts here to maintain her balance. Awesome job:)!!
Confucius said: "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall", and that is certainly a proverb for skaters! Watch our StarSkaters Rise Up to the challenge of creating and collaborating a musical routine in just 5 minutes:)!!
Creative collaboration on the ice is as cool as it gets;)!!
Our StarSkaters always 'Rise Up' to meet challenges, and for this one, as part of our team building sessions, they had to choreograph a short musical routine for their group in just 5 minutes. Enjoy:)!!
