Resources like CERB and CEBA have been essential to help Canadians through the pandemic, but can be inaccessible for non-English readers. It’s why we've created accessible translations and step-by-step instruction videos on how to apply in Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese & Punjabi. Sept 30 is #OrangeShirtDay a movement that has evolved out of survivor Phyllis Webstad's story of her orange shirt that was taken away from her on her first day of school in Williams Lake, BC. Today, we will be wearing orange shirts to recognize Indigenous peoples and communities in the past, present and those who did not make it home, as well as commit to honouring and supporting them on their journey towards social and economic inclusion. Salmon n' Bannock Bistro is a locally owned and operated business, and the only Indigenous Bistro in Vancouver. The owner Inez Cook is both a member of the Nuxalk nation and a survivor of the Sixties Scoop. She grew up in Vancouver. "I opened the restaurant in 2010 with my good friend Remi. He retired about a year and a half ago, so now I'm flying solo. I realize that I've been learning about my own heritage through my restaurant. The entire team is indigenous. Showing up and... showcasing our heritage with pride. We just got a new awning, it's in Hq'mim and Squamish. We're honoring the lands we live and work on. It's so beautiful. It's so nice ten years in that we're able to put the right awning up. We're a small business, and June is our busiest month of the year, and obviously everything has been cancelled due to COVID-19. However, we're still doing Uber Eats with a limited menu." Salmon n' Bannock serves food from the land and water, with wild fish and free-range organic game. It's indigenous ingredients have been designed for the modern palette. Salmon n' Bannock will soon be re-opening their dining room, accommodating fifteen people at a time with a three course menu. The bistro just celebrated the restaurant's 10th anniversary, giving Inez the chance to reflect: "I had another financial institution approach me and promise me the sun, the moon, and the stars, and they didn't follow through. Vancity actually hired us for a very high end event. It was remarkable to get that contract. We worked really hard and showed them what we were all about. And at that event, the announcement was made that they would help us. Not only did they help us, but they hired us so we could make money at the same time. We're still a living culture. We're right here. We're your neighbours, your doctors, and your lawyers. There's over 600 nations in Canada and over 200 of them are right here in British Columbia." In celebration of National Indigenous People's month, we are honoured to be sharing stories and highlighting some of our Indigenous business members.
