Today VANDU and Pivot Legal issued a joint call to disband the VPD's new "response unit." VANDU member Delilah Gregg: The VPD has no real compassion towards people in the DTES. It is a waste of time and resources to be giving the residents of the DTES tickets for low priority crimes. A lot of people don’t even have homes, that means their very existence is illegal because it breaks bylaws and rules. And people’s lack of access to resources is getting worse with COVID and Vancouver in lockdown. People have nowhere to get themselves well.

Aiyanas Feardorcha Ormond has worked at Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users for a decade (I think?) and has been helping organize actions as long as I can remember. Solidarity is in his blood. Aiyanas is leaving his job at VANDU to do other stuff. In the last few weeks, I have seen people broken up about him leaving. Thanks for your work, comrade. Photos: Alexander B. Kim

Alliance for People’s Health Vancouver, BC, Coast Salish Territories [email protected] August 17, 2020... It is with tremendous shock and outrage that we learn of the extrajudicial killing of friend, fellow health worker, and human rights defender Zara Alvarez. Zara was a paralegal and a human rights defender with Karapatan- the Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights, and a research and advocacy officer with the Negros Island Health Integrated Project. Since establishing our relationship with the Negros Island Health Integrated Project in 2008, Zara has been a friend of the Alliance for People’s Health. Zara was a host to our members over the years, and we learned from and admired much in Zara. How she traveled to urban poor and far flung rural communities to bear witness to and stand with communities facing hunger during tiempo muerto, displacement from urban poor communities, and landlessness in the countryside. How she worked to prepare for health missions in the mountains of Negros. How she prepared to distribute food and essential supplies to families affected by climate change disasters such as landslides and typhoons. How in the midst of the struggle, she maintained an unwavering hope in the people and an admirable inner strength. Zara was well versed in both the daily concerns and the root problems of the communities she served. Despite red-tagging, threats, and a two year detention on trumped up charges, Zara refused to be deterred from her work in the field, and continued to struggle against the ravages of imperialism on the health, livelihoods, and lives of the people of Negros Island. From the Alliance for People’s Health, we send our condolences to Zara’s family, friends, and colleagues. We hold Zara in our hearts as we vow to continue in solidarity with the struggle for people’s health, for land to till, and for a just and lasting peace in the Philippines. Rest in Power, Zara! Zara, Presente! Justice for Zara Alvarez! Justice for all victims of extrajudicial killings!

WE SPEAK THEIR NAMES > WE MARCH WITH RAGE! The war on the poor and the war on drugs are killing people in our communities at an alarming rate - not only the record high overdose rates, but in all the grinding ways poverty, colonization, police violence, and hateful stigma attack poor people who use drugs everyday. And in the context of the COVID lockdown we haven't even had the time to remember and mark the passing out friends, comrades and community leaders who have passe...d away over the last six months. Join us as we share stories&analysis; march with rage; and celebrate and remember the loved ones that we've lost! Speeches, drummers, songs and poetry! Saturday, August 15, Noon Main and Hastings (Start)

VANDU calls for freedom for Janet Villamar, April Tricia Musa , Marilou Amaro and Edmylyn Gruta (the Pandi 4), Kadamay activists who were kidnapped by police following a peaceful protest of President Duterte's State of the Nation Address. We condemn the Philippine State's repression of poor people demanding support and justice, and the criminalzation of activism in the Philippines! Long live international solidarity! #ActivismIsNotTerrorism #JunkTerrorLaw #FreePandi4
