ABM: Artist Talk with Shawn Kuruneru & Jennifer Castle: Box of Rain, Thursday, October 15, 12PM PST, Online (youtube) A video conversation between Shawn Kuruneru and Jennifer Castle about their recent collaboration Box of Rain. Box of Rain is a new publication comprised of poems by singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle and drawings by visual artist Shawn Kuruneru. Approaching the book in the same spirit as Dada artist games of the 1920s, Jennifer would send poems to Shawn to tu...rn into comics by drawing random images, often the first thing that came to his mind. With very few words, we simply sent and shared, and Shawn drew to the poems he was drawn to, no context, no explanation. I wrote mostly in the mornings when I wasn't on tour with the intention that by writing poems daily and consistently I would plant seeds to expand my publishing from music to include the written page. A creative experiment in chance, drawing and language, Box of Rain collects over a years work in this first collaboration between these two Canadian artists. ABM: Fortner & Felicity talk about George Perec, Heavy Metal and the Space Shuttle Columbia, Saturday, October 10, 2PM PST, Online (zoom) Noted scholar, artist, librarian and independent curator, Felicity Taylor will discuss with Montreal artist Fortner Anderson his latest book projects. During the one-hour online talk, Anderson will present his work and read selections from recent publications, including his latest book Considerations. Inspired by the work of French author ...George Perec and American poet Joe Brainard, Considerations uses a series of constraints to create an auto-portrait of Anderson’s life. The text is comprised of a thousand sentences, each of which is a memory from Anderson’s past. Each sentence is composed with a single verb and no verb in the text appears twice. This publication, published in the format of a Golden Age comic book, will appear in November 2020. Anderson will also read from his book project annunciations and present audio selections of the re-lectures of his readings by two electro-acoustic composers: Christian Calon from Montreal and Berlin composer Alessandro Bosetti. Christian Calon reinterprets Anderson’s reading of Belly into Fire, itself a poetic re-lecture of the Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report, published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Alessandro Bosetti reworks the Joint Task Force Guantanamo Standard Operating Procedures for Camp Delta, the US military installation in Guantanamo, Cuba. Taylor and Anderson will also discuss Anderson’s latest durational performance readings, Points of Departure, which led to the creation of his bronzed book multiple. ABM: Sh*t Talk, Stephanie Gagne and Manuel Axel Strain, October 5, 12, 19 and 26, 12pm PST, online (vimeo) Sh*t Talk is a series of humorous and critical web-based audiobooks, addressing art-making and independent publishing in Vancouver. For four weeks in October, hosts Manuel Axel Strain and Stephanie Gagne interview a local writer, artist or curator about their practices and opinions. Instead of just saying a lot of negative things about Vancouver’s art scene, this audio...book celebrates gossiping as a means of satirically responding to current political and artistic movements. Each gossip session begins with an introductory text featuring a theme and special guest, as they collectively discuss their opinions, identities, fields and sense of place. With the use of frivolous stories and cheesy facts, Sh*t Talk tackles not only the things that bother us but the politics surrounding art and book making. ABM: Spunkt Art Now, October 131, Maison de la culture Janine-Sutto (2550 E Ontario St, Montreal, QC, Frontenac Metro Station). Spunkt Art Now is an investigation into the influences and manifestations of punk in contemporary art. The parallels between punk and contemporary art are deeply rooted in the notion of avant-garde. Indeed, punk borrows its arrogance, sense of provocation and nihilism from well-known artistic movements such as Situationism, Dada and Futurism. But... how does this unique legacy translate to the contemporary moment? What might punk offer to contemporary art and its audiences? A channel for anger? A cannon of political movements? Spunkt Art Now brings to the fore the living aesthetics of the punk movement through performances, exhibitions and a publication.
