Vancouver Fruit Tree Project 19.11.2020

So cool! We wonder if rotten fruit would work as well.

Vancouver Fruit Tree Project 15.11.2020

Extending a big thank you to all of those involved with the project this year! This was our most successful season to date. We worked with 154 volunteers and 85 tree owners to facilitate 95 picks, rescue 8,670 pounds of fruit, and redistribute them to 5,000 clients through 16 community partnerships. We couldn’t have done it without all of our amazing community members and are so grateful for all your support!

As our 2020 Season officially winds down; we want to extend a huge THANK YOU to our incredible volunteers, team leads, tree owners and community partners. This season we worked with 154 volunteers and 85 tree owners to facilitate 95 picks, rescue 8,670 pounds of fruit, and redistribute them to 5,000 clients through 16 community partnerships. This was our most successful season to date, and we have so much gratitude for everyone who made this possible! To say thank you, we inv...ite all new and current community members to our free virtual Season Wrap Up Party. Have you met Ryan, our Fruit Rescue Team Lead yet? Hi, I’m Ryan. Originally from Seattle, where I was a student intern on the University of Washington Farm, I moved up to Vancouver a few years ago to be with my significant other who recently graduated from UBC. Since moving up here I have been involved with multiple food related non-profits, and I am excited to join the VFTP for this season! I am enjoying the sense of community working with local fruit tree owners to bri...ng fruit that would otherwise go to waste to those with food insecurity. This is especially important now in the time of Coronavirus. I have a long time interest in sustainable food systems and a particular interest in seed saving and classical veggie breeding. I have been working with farms in Washington state and BC developing locally adapted varieties of peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beets, winter squash, and even getting true seed from garlic. Besides my interests in all things plant related, I also enjoy reading science fiction and curling, including working as an ice tech this winter. Although originally planned for this year and delayed because of Coronavirus, I will be attending graduate school next fall to pursue research in paleobotany looking at mosses and other underappreciated plants from hundreds of millions of years ago! It’s so wonderful to know this beautiful bounty was shared with the community at Collingwood House. My first pick with VFTP yesterday was such an amazing experience! And so much fun! I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this wonderful project. Thank you! Here are a few photos from our pick yesterday. I’ve included pics of the lovely fig and feta salad I was able to make for dinner! My hubby was a happy camper :)... Looking forward to helping out with more picks this summer! I’m retired so generally free and happy to give a hand even if you need someone on short notice. Have a great day! And thank you to you and all the VFTP team for all the great work you are doing! - Cory (Volunteer) #vanfruittree #nonprofits #communitywork #support #community #fruitsecurity #foodsecurity #zerowaste #foodwaste #sustainability #vancouverbc #fruits #ecofriendly #community #burnabybc #recyclebc #volunteer #foodfacts #vancouverzerowaste #foodsecurity #burnabybc @ Vancouver, British Columbia
