"Drawing on similar efforts around the globe, the legislation would establish legal standing for great apes, elephants, whales and dolphins in sentencing for captivity offences, making it possible for people to speak for them in court, and for the court to order relocations or improved conditions."

URGENT: Take action to end extreme confinement of pregnant pigs! https://vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/posts/gestation-stalls Animal welfare scientists, veterinarians and other experts have described gestation stalls for pregnant pigs as one of the cruelest forms of animal confinement and the equivalent to living in an airline seat. The pig farming industry in Canada promised to transition toward group housing by 2024, but now they want to delay that deadline until 2029, which will lead to continued suffering for hundreds of thousands of pregnant pigs. Will you join us in calling on industry to keep it's original promise?

"Last year, Alberta passed the Trespass Statutes (Protecting Law-Abiding Property Owners) Amendment Act, a series of amendments to existing trespass laws, and in June, the Ontario government passed similar legislation, Bill 156, the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act. Both bills effectively made it illegal for whistleblowers, whom the campaigners McArthur works with rely on, to expose animal abuse and neglect on farms."

Hello VHS supporters! We are looking for research volunteers to help us share our report that will be completed shortly: Addressing Animal Neglect through the Provision of Veterinary Outreach Services: Summarizing Best Practices Through Literature and Data. This report addresses the barriers that keep structurally vulnerable peoples from accessing veterinary assistance for their animals. We will share the findings with animal protection organizations (rescue, sheltering, e...nforcement) throughout Canada and need your help to compile a list of these agencies. We will promote the best practices to them, ensuring in-time veterinary needs of pets are met, human-animal bonds are maintained, and the negative ripple effects of trauma are avoided. Your participation will help us to spread this important message! We estimate that it will take each volunteer about 5-10 hours to compile the list (depending on the province), and we are looking to have these lists compiled by December 15th, 2020. In addition, if you are a French speaker, please let us know in your volunteer profile as we need a volunteer to compile a list of agencies within Quebec. If you are interested in participating, please first sign up on our Volunteer page, here: https://vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/volunteer Once you’ve signed up, our Lead Researcher, Celeste Morales, will reach out to you with more information on what your participation would entail. If you have any questions before signing up, please email Celeste at [email protected]. Thank you and we appreciate you offering your time!

Vulnerable women often face barriers to finding housing, especially if they have pets. VHS is launching a new project in November to help overcome those barriers. Entitled Preventing women’s homelessness project: Assisting vulnerable women and their pets, the program will provide preventive care for pets, including deworming, de-fleaing and vaccinations, and address medical issues. The project will partner with social service agencies to help women transition out of homelessness, ensuring they retain the vital support of their animal companions. We're grateful to PetSmart Charities of Canada for generously providing funding towards this project. Learn more: https://vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca//support-women-and-p/

Over the next year VHS will be partnering with social service agencies, as part of our new Preventing women’s homelessness project: Assisting vulnerable women and their pets to decrease the barriers for women with pets entering short-term transition housing. Many facilities do not have the knowledge or capacity to address the animal health issues that come with housing pets short-term. This program will provide preventive care for pets, including deworming, de-fleaing and ...vaccinations, and address medical issues. You can support this important work by donating towards our $30,000 matching grant, to ensure as many animals as possible can be helped.
