VPD seeks witnesses after pedestrian seriously injured in collision Vancouver Vancouver Police are investigating a serious collision that sent a pedestrian to hospital with grave injuries last month, and ask anyone who saw what happened to call police. The victim, a 63-year-old woman, was walking near Rupert Street and East 14th Avenue around 2 p.m. on December 22 when she was struck by white Cadillac. The pedestrian suffered a serious head injury and was rushed to hospital..., where she remains. This collision probably didn’t look very serious when it happened, so we believe there are witnesses who didn’t stick around to talk to police, says Sergeant Steve Addison, VPD. Sadly, the incident has had tragic and life-altering consequences. Speed and alcohol are not contributing factors, and the driver remained on scene to talk to police. Investigators believe the driver’s vision may have been affected by the late-afternoon sun. VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit asks witnesses, or anyone with dash-cam video, to call 604-717-3012. On August 11, 2019, at 8:30 in the evening, a young man attempted to perform a stunt on his BMX bike from an elevated three-storey platform at the Vancouver Convention Centre. As he performed the stunt, he clipped his bike on a glass pane, which caused him to fall forward, hit his head on the concrete, and fall into the water. David Mason saw what happened, and watched as the man’s brother raced to help. He was unable to get him out of the water. David dropped his belongings,... climbed over a railing, and jumped to the pier below. The drop distance caused David to fracture both of his ankles when he landed. Despite this, he persevered, crawling toward the man’s brother. The two of them were able to pull the young man from the water, and David immediately began CPR until emergency responders arrived. Sadly, the young man did not survive. David was taken to hospital, where he had surgery for his injuries. For his quick action, and doing everything possible to help two strangers in desperate need despite serious injury, Mr. David Mason was awarded the Vancouver Police Board’s highest award for civilian bravery, the Award of Merit. #BeyondTheCall Read more stories of award recipients: http://ow.ly/dfRG50CL4qQ

Vancouver Police are investigating a stabbing in Strathcona Park early this morning. The 46-year-old male victim is in hospital. This man has some major stab wounds to his body, says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. With the amount of people in the park, we believe there is someone who has information on what happened. The victim is believed to have been stabbed inside a tent in the park around midnight. At 8 a.m. this morning, a woman found the victim on the corner of Ra...ymur Avenue and Venables Street wrapped in a towel soaked in blood. The victim is in hospital in critical but stable condition. It is very troubling to know this man was suffering from his extensive injures for eight hours or more before paramedics or police were called, add Visintin. Two possible suspects have been arrested at this time. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 9-1-1 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Meet #VPD Sergeant A.J. Benefield: "I have been with the VPD for over 22 years. I have worked in patrol, Robbery/Assault/Arson investigations, international war crime investigations, as a jail sergeant, and I am currently the sergeant in the Mental Health Unit, where I supervise 12 employees. When I finished my psychology degree at SFU, I wanted a career that was challenging, dynamic, and stable -- and that combined psychology, law, and staying in shape. Of all the police de...partments, VPD was my first choice. It was a larger department, and reflected the diversity of our community, and they were looking for women who were smart, strong, and determined. As well, there were a lot of options for job advancement and variety, and they valued and promoted the advancement of their employees. My background is of Canadian and Colombian roots. I was brought up speaking, reading, and writing Spanish by my mom, who insisted that my brother and I knew and appreciated our culture. My mom used to force me to sit at the table and read, write and speak Spanish three times a week for two hours. If I got something wrong, she would make me write it out 10 times. Then I went through all my schooling, where everyone only spoke English. Colombian women are strong, both mentally and physically, and we are proud, kind, generous, and loving. This has helped me overcome many professional and personal challenges throughout my life. As for my community, I have helped break gender stereotypes, bridge gaps in my community in their understanding of the role of the police, and helped remove barriers for other people in the Latino community by succeeding in this career. Right now, when the public is divergent in how they see the police and its role in society, when it comes to interactions with visible minorities, I am confident that how I conduct myself with the public will always reflect positively on the VPD. My language skills have opened doors for me being able to help people who have been victims of crimes or witnesses by speaking in their mother tongue. I was selected nationally for a posting overseas working for the United Nations due to my language skills and being well-rounded, both culturally and professionally. I celebrate my heritage every day by listening to reggaeton and salsa (despite objections from my kids and my husband). I make Colombian food, like patacones and empanadas, when I have time, and I appreciate all the blessings I have been given. Muchisimas Gracias al Departamento de Policia de Vancouuver y a la comunidad de Vancouver por su apoyo! (Translation: Thank you to the VPD and the city of Vancouver for your support!)" #LATenCAN #LatinAmericanHeritageMonth
Vancouver Police are investigating an attempted child abduction in South Vancouver that occurred on Wednesday afternoon and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. A young girl was approached, she listened to her gut and knew something wasn’t right, says Constable Tania Visintin. She was able to get to a place of safety before the situation escalated. Yesterday at about 3:30 p.m., a 13-year-old girl was walking home from school near Kerr Street and So...uth East Marine Drive when she was followed by a man driving a black, four-door, newer model sedan with a grey interior. The driver stopped and told the girl to get into his vehicle. The driver is described as a white man with a dark or tanned complexion. He appeared to be between 25 and 35 years old and between five feet nine inches tall and six feet tall with an athletic build. He has short dark brown hair and dark brown stubble on his face. He was wearing a black short-sleeved t-shirt and Ray-Ban style sunglasses. It appeared the man had clear plastic wrap over a tattoo on his neck. Investigators are looking to speak to the driver of this black sedan or anyone who may have information about this incident. Furthermore, police are looking for information about any male who may have recently obtained a tattoo on his neck, adds Visintin. Police are urging residents in the area to be cautious and call 9-1-1 immediately to report suspicious activity. Anyone with information or anyone with dash cam video from October 14 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the area of Kerr Street and South East Marine Drive is asked to call investigators at 604-717-0603 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

In response to reports of break-ins and thefts in Yaletown, Vancouver Police officers initiated a project to locate, identify, and arrest the suspects involved. Since August 1, there have been nine police documented files of mail theft, break-and-enter or suspicious circumstances relating to frauds in the downtown core, says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. Patrol officers heard the concerns of the community and noticed ongoing trends. They took the initiative to tackle this... ongoing concern. On October 21, patrol officers, with the assistance of the VPD Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant for a residence near Howe and Davie streets. Officers located evidence related to theft of mail from multiple buildings in Yaletown. Some of the items seized were: Fraudulent firearms licenses Fraudulent social insurance cards Fraudulent BC driver’s license Fraudulent passports Numerous airsoft, pellet and imitation handguns and riffles Flare gun Counterfeit money Four people were arrested and are facing charges related to identity theft, fraud, theft of mail, and possession of a firearm. All charges have been recommended to Crown counsel.
