I remember the first time I started painting like it was yesterday, I was five years old when I switched to a new school, and when my mom dropped me off, I couldn't stop crying. As I stood by the door sobbing my teacher walked me over to me and handed me a paintbrush, some watercolours and a colouring book and told me to paint my feelings. Every day from that day, we started my day by painting; it felt as natural as air passing through my lungs. So by the time I was ten, I k...new this was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Now that our lives are so digital, I love to surround myself handmade goods, and I wanted to make sure all of my items feel as if they were made with love. Here's a bit about my process. Whenever I'm creating new prints, textile work or wall covering, I usually start by using my sketchbook or fine art paper with Japanese ink. Then I digitize it and add my final touch to keep the handmade look and feel.

Hi Everyone My Name is Tafui, pronounced Taf(we), & I will be taking over Vancouver Special's feed for the next few days. Let me start by introducing myself to you (get your chips ready because this one is a long one. I'm originally from Kingston, Jamaica, &would often spend my summer holidays travelling to other countries as a way to experience cultures that are different from my own, & that's when I fell in love with Canada. When I was given a chance to study abroad, Mon...treal was my first choice. Ever since I was ten years old, I knew I wanted to have locks & be an artist when I grew up so naturally, that's the direction I went into. I studied Fine Arts @ Dawson College, & then I discovered the Industrial design program at Concordia University & that opened up a new world to me. Not only did I have to design digital & physical products, but I also had to make them, & I was immediately hooked! After graduating from University, I moved back to Jamaica; I continued my Fine Art practice in addition to working as an Art Director & University Processor. I later moved to Ottawa, Canada, in 2004, where I did the same thing. After going through a creative block that lasted way longer than I wished, in 2013 started an Art & Design blog that focused on Creative Canadians. At first, it was a research project, but it later inspired me to launch my studio & online shop. I wanted to offer a more diverse range of art/design based objects that I couldn't find anywhere else. I also wanted to provide authentic museum-quality reproductions of my work so that folks who are just starting could afford to adorn their walls with my work. In 2014 shoptafui.com was born, I offer Fine Art, custom design goods for their home, and I also work with interior designers to make their client's space look extra special. I launched my textile collection title Eau Noir, in 2016, which is currently carried here at Vancouver Special. I moved to Vancouver in 2018, & I can't believe how amazing it is here!!! I didn't realize how much I missed the ocean, & nothing beats the cool breeze rustling through the fragrant trees. This week I'll be sharing my work & process so stay tuned! See more

It was 12 years ago today that I opened Vancouver Special. I found some old photos of what the store looked like in those early months of business. So much has changed but so much has stayed the same. We are still a local, independent owner-operated business. We just have a lot more space and inventory now. And a website ! And we have grown to a team of 6 and a large extended network of past employees we think of as family. Thanks everyone for all your support over the past dozen years. Here’s to 12 more!
