Happy international mountain day! As much as I enjoy spending time in the forest, nothing will match the experience of waking up in the mountains after a cold night to see the first light of day. Here's a small collection of some of my favourite mountain photos!

More fog, golden light, and lone tree goodness on this dreary Vancouver day.

Vanexus Photography 21.11.2020

This is by far one of my favourite trees to photograph near where I live. I've visited this spot many times over the years, and I finally have two photos that I'm happy with, and best reflect a "change in seasons". There really is no good way to show fall and spring with this tree as it's look does not change during those seasons, so a winter/summer look will have to do. Make sure to swipe and see both photos! . . . ... . #nikoncanada #landscapephotography #landscapelovers #earthfocus #igrefined #earthscope #coloursofnature #nature_perfection #visualsoflife #canadiancreatives #discoverearth #travelstoke #depthsofearth #majestic_earth #earthlandscape #jaw_dropping_shots #earth_pix #bns_landscape #fstoppers #earth_escape #natgeoyourshot #earthspirit #yourshotphotographer #hellobc #pnwonderland #explorecanada See more

We came across some of the most beautiful foggy conditions yesterday morning! While light and composition are two key factors to a successful photo, fog is the secret ingredient to elevating the atmosphere. Another fun morning out with @spnnr and @rawperfectionphotography. On a slightly more serious note, yesterday morning was another reminder that coming across racism and race issues doesn't take a back seat, even if you're out in nature at 7am. Being yelled and sworn at by ...a family who felt it was their right to be on the walking path more than us, and reverting to the old "Do you understand English" and "You people don't understand" wasn't exactly how I imagined we'd start the morning. It was one of the first times I've lost my cool in a situation like this in a very long time. I guess we all have our triggers, and those two sentences happen to be mine. This sadly wasn't the first time I've come across racism (shocking) , and won't be the last. But I'm happy to have been there with good company to let cooler heads prevail and to shift gears and focus on the beauty that was around us. As I said in the story yesterday, thank you to the racists for guiding us to better photo opportunities See more

To me, nothing quite matches the first moments of sunrise. There's a certain calm and serenity, which is accompanied with sudden warmth and an unmistakable golden hue. I'm always in peace while out for sunrise, regardless of where I am or what I'm shooting.

Tofino from air is absolutely beautiful. This was the first real flight that I've taken for the purpose of photography. And while I have a few colour photos I'm happy with, this black and white of the coast really stood out for me. The coastal fog pops in white, against the lush green forest hidden in the shadows. I took these photos months ago, but since I'm terrible with post processing, I'm finally getting around to editing the photos. Except a mix of Vancouver Island and the Rockies from the next little while!

A lone orange tree standing in front of backdrop of a burnt forest. I've visited this area a few times, and it never stops to be both impressive and intimidating. Seeing the impact of forest fires on an entire valley really does put the level of destruction into perspective. The sun was hitting these trees at the perfect time of the day to create long, angular shadows and really give this scene a painterly feeling.

Finding ways to make the most out of rainy, gloomy days. I've tried to push myself very much out of my comfort zone during this trip. Both physically and with how and what I've decided to photograph. Its been a fantastic experience so far, and here's one example from yesterday. The way the orange leaves mixed with the almost aqua water immediately caught my eye. Also, these trees are submerged! I've never really had a chance to photograph a scene like this so it was really fu...n to experience. I decided to go for an abstract image that shows movement, both with the water and with the leaves. Travel Alberta #abstract #fall See more

At the foot of a disappearing giant I really wanted to do this glacier justice. Not only because it's absolutely beautiful and massive in person, but also due to the fact that it can be a recorded memory for me once its likely to be gone. This glacier is receding 5 meters a year and the pace is only getting faster. Walking up today, it was sad to see the signs of where it was only 20 years ago. The weather was cold, wet and windy, and hopefully the mood of this photo helps convey the feeling of being there. Travel Alberta

Here's a pano from a super dramatic sunset a few nights ago. One side of the sky was catching the last bit of sunlight, while the other was covered with a dark and moody storm cloud. This is a portion of a 6 shot pano, really the only way to do the sky justice.

I decided to spend the weekend driving through previously not visited side roads in search of early fall colours. While I didn't have a specific plan, I knew I wanted to shoot trees. And I came back with so many photos I'm happy with. This one specifically being one of them. These trees aren't just dark, they're charred black from a forest fire. I drove past this area 3 times before finally pulling up and walking into the forest in search of compositions. I've seen many photos of lush greens and beautiful flowers growing only a year or two after serious forest fires and this was the first time I had a chance to shoot a scene like it. Black trees, dead brow/red leaves, and vibrant greens filled the area. While it was sad to see the destruction, the scene was absolutely beautiful and serene, and so naturally painterly.

Whenever I'm out photographing new locations, I look like a person who's lost their mind. I drive as slow as possible, and constantly look left or right to spot potential compositions and photo opportunities. This was the case on this special morning in Vancouver Island. I was lucky enough to spot this scene, turn the car around and setup just in time for first rays of light to breakthrough the right side of the frame and start evaporating the dew and ice that had collected on this beautiful tree in the - 10 degree weather. Some of you may not agree with this, but I can not wait for colder fall/winter mornings! #hellobc #explorecanada #vancouverisland

Happy BC Day everyone! I consider myself so thankful to live in this beautiful corner of the world, not just because of the abundance of natural beauty, but for the lives we're able to lead and for comforts that we're granted on a daily basis. Here's a collection of some of my favourite BC photos, some of which I've never shared here (including the first photo). I've tried to include our lush evergreen forests, our beautiful mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and beaches. While I...'ve had a chance to travel to some parts of BC, I've barely scratched the surface and there's a whole lot more to see. "Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere." A quote from the amazing Carl Sagan. After chasing NEOWISE for the past 10 days, I realized I didn't have a good, proper photo with it. I'm usually not one for putting myself in photos, but this opportunity is just too rare, and I love the night sky too much to pass it up. I shot this with an 85mm lens, and the camera was placed quite a distance away from me to create the sense of scale.... The foreground is one photo, and the sky is a stack of 18 photos to reduce noise and bring more detail to the comet. Both are at 85mm so no size changes were done and this is the real scale. Make sure to see the full crop as well! #NEOWISE #cometneowise #astrophotography Destination British Columbia HuffPost British Columbia Global BC CBC Vancouver Daily Hive Vancouver Vancouver Is Awesome See more

My entire Instagram grid has turned into a #cometneowise gallery And for good reason! Here's one from last night. This was definitely the brightest I've seen the comet, and framed with one of my favourite trees and backgrounds in all of Greater Vancouver. This is a 10 photo stack to reduce noise. And I love the fact that the tree is framed by the comet, as well as Betelguese on the right (10th brightest star in our night sky). As an added bonus, the comet's reflection is v...isible in the pond, and the tail is brighter and more detailed than my previous photos. This one is definitely an all around favourite, and worth the over 50 mosquito bites! #NEOWISE CBC Vancouver Destination British Columbia Global BC Daily Hive Vancouver See more

I took these photos after 50 hours of not sleeping. I'd normally say not to do that, but this comet has been worth it. We headed out with some friends on this night (my third straight night out) and I was thinking of mostly showing them the comet. We took photos at Queen Elizabeth park and Jericho Beach before heading home. A few busy days at work later, and last night @rawperfectionphotography sends me a photo featured by @vancity that shows the Aurora from Jericho. I look c...loser at the photo and see myself on the beach. I jumped on my computer and for the first time really looked at that night's photos and what do you know? Aurora over the city with #cometneowise. This will likely be a once in a lifetime photo opp for me. The first photo is also likely going to be my favourite of this comet (although that may change by Sunday ) Even though the Aurora in the first photo is just a thin green band, I like the composition much better. The second photo is with the 85mm lens from Jericho Beach and you can clearly see the purple pillars on the left. Late spring is definitely waterfall hunting season in and around Vancouver. The combination of rainy days, melting snow packs, and lush greens makes for amazing photo opportunities. I've had a chance to go shoot a few falls over the past month with @rawperfectionphotography @tristan.todd and @dyptre. The outings have been super fun, and I always enjoy going out with other photographers to see their process and vision. This one in particular is one of my favourites. The most unforgettable night I've spent under the Northern Lights. Seeing these colours dance over Moraine Lake and the famous 10 peaks was the true definition of a wow moment. Beauty from the Ashes Today is the 40th anniversary of Mount St. Helen's eruption. I had a chance to finally visit this area last summer, and it left a big impression on me. The landscape completely changes as you get closer to the volcano. While signs of devastation are clearly present, the most amazing part is the life that has sprung from it. Beautiful, colourful wildflowers all around the hills, growing thanks in part to the volcanic soil. On this night, I heard coyotes howl in the valley, and watched the Milkyway move across the dark sky. Hoping to return here soon

Vanexus Photography 01.10.2019

Moments of magic under the Aurora. To me, photography has always been more about capturing moments and trying to portray them as accurately as possible to what I saw in the field. I've never really enjoyed post processing, truly. If anything I really hate sitting behind the computer editing photos. But I understand that it's necessary and I try to make it as fun (with good music) as possible. While I've learned a lot of the techniques and have definitely used them in my pho...tos, I try to stay as minimal as possible with my edits. This in many ways limits my opportunities, as I'm limited to what I see in front of me when I'm taking a photo. I have definitely pushed the boundaries before and combined elements, but that is done very rarely and I always point it out when I post a photo that has been heavily altered. I love being outdoors, in nature, enjoying the moment. I've mentioned this before, I generally have a sense of calm and serenity and try to work that into the photos I take and put out. Here's one from one of the most memorable nights under the stars. I'll put a few before/after photos in my stories today so you can get an idea of what goes into my processing. Last night's #supermoon rising over Vancouver and Mt. Baker. This was a fun but more challenging shot than last months supermoon, since moonrise was happening later and we were well into blue hour. Balancing city lights and moonlight to get a proper exposure was the most difficult part. This is two exposures, one for city and one for moon, blended together. The moon size or shape has not been changed or touched at all. Little bit of information on why the moon looks warmer in... colour and more "squished": The squashed-looking Moon also has a much warmer tint than the high Moon. This is due to the low Moon’s light passing through more of Earth’s atmosphere than the high Moon’s light. That squashed look is due to Earth’s atmosphere behaving like a weak lens with moonlight being bent more near the horizon than it is slightly higher above the horizon. Hope you're all doing well! #superpinkmoon from tonight. I went out shooting tonight's full moon, keeping socially distant of course, and with very little hope of catching anything. Many parks and locations are closed for good reason, and Stanley park will also be closed to cars from tomorrow. On a last minute whim, and after some research, I decided to head down with a couple of friends (still maintaining social distancing) to Stanley park to catch the moon over Brockton Point. As I was setting up in m...y spot, another photographer with a "moon bazooka" walked by and asked a simple question: "Are you in the right spot to catch it?"and walked way more forward than I had planned. Photos like this are one of the reasons why we love fall. Mundane trees turn into canvases of colour. What we really liked about this scene was the way light hit the tree, illuminating the colourful leaves and hiding the bottom of the tree, making it seem like it was floating within the forest. We've had an amazing streak of sunny days in Vancouver, hope everyone had an opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather . . ... . . . #nikoncanada #shainblumff #landscapephotography #landscapelovers #earthfocus #igrefined #earthscope #traveltheworld #tlpicks #coloursofnature #nature_perfection #visualsoflife #canadiancreatives #discoverearth #travelstoke #depthsofearth #majestic_earth #earthlandscape #jaw_dropping_shots #earth_pix #bns_landscape #fall #earth_escape #natgeotravel #earthspirit #yourshotphotographer #hellobc #pnw #pnwonderland #explorecanada See more

Snow is slowly starting to appear on the north shore peaks, and it can create magical conditions when mixed in with fall colours. Here's a photo of the Lions looking majestic as always from a couple of years ago. We got to capture fresh snow on these elusive peaks, fog, and fall colours. The perfect tri-fecta! Our 2020 calendar is still available for pre-order, but we are running out of copies. Link is attached below: https://www.vanexusphotography.com//vanexus-photography-20

One of our favourite photos from the Canadian Rockies. We didn't have much hope for a good susnet on this particular night. Dark clouds over most of the sky, Cougar in the area signs posted near by, and no one else in the area for the majority of our time that night. Suddenly a little window of light opened up in the sky, with this beautiful burst of colour matching the trees reflecting in the lake. And within 5 minutes of sunset, rain started to come down on us. Mountain weather is tough to predict, and that's what creates these amazing opportunities to capture light! #explorecanada #travelalberta #kananaskis

Layers upon layers of peaks were visible from the lookout. The soft, pre-dawn pink skies really cheered us up after a pretty foggy and cold evening in the mountains. Rainier has definitely stolen a piece of our hearts, we'll be back there a lot more in the future!
