VHS MOVIE REVIEW: Looking back to 1983, Michael Mann's second film, The Keep was a gothic horror fairy tale set in WW2, based on the 1981 novel of the same name by F. Paul Wilson. The film was almost amazing, with a compelling story of good vs. evil told through the supernatural battle of immortals Gaelen and Malesar alongside the real world battle of same that raged against the nazis in 1941. The film had amazing performances by a younger Sir Ian Mckellen, Jurgen Prochnow, ...Alberta Watson, and Gabriel Byrne. The film has a beautiful score by the iconic Tangerine Dream with breathtaking cinematography with Mann's signature blue hues, slow-moving visual, and use of lens flares. Sadly, the film faced significant production challenges and interference from Paramount studios, clipping the film from 210 minutes to 96 minutes for its final runtime causing enormous issues with plot and continuity, and unfinished sound design which makes much of the key and impressive dialogue unhearable. The visual effects designer died partway through production with no one able to complete it, resulting in an unsatisfying and condensed ending (with the original ending needing to be scrapped). . While one of the most imbalanced films, there is enough good to outweigh the clear mishaps and shortcomings of a film that had so much potential. Worth a watch both for entertainment and for analysis :) #thekeepmovie #thekeep1983 #thekeepfilm #1980shorror #horrorfilm #horrormovie #horrormoviereview #horrorreview #horrorfilmreview

Great article from @cbcnews about 2020 and the horror boom. I guess life imitates art imitates life... HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! Thanks @nicifoto for the story!
The VHS is a huge fan of the found footage horror sub-genre and recently discovered 2015's Hell House LLC from @terrorfilms written and directed by Stephen Cognetti @sajcognetti. A team of entrepreneurs set up shop in the ominous and abandoned Abbadon Hotel in upstate New York to create a haunted house. We know right away that the opening night leads to the death of 15 people, but then we are taken back to the beginning to unravel the mystery alongside the aloof and realist...ic protagonists. The characters are well developed before jumping right into the jump scares, and the audience gets enough of an explanation to what's going on to feel satisifed, without feeling force fed exposition. This film strikes a fine balance between the found footage gags and feelings of genuine atmospheric doom. VHS-recommended! What are you watching these days?
