Vanished Hamilton 29.12.2020

From the book Vanished Hamilton III - Clarence Crane, of Cleveland, had hired a pill maker to design a new shape for a candy in 1912. This was the same year the Titanic sank and the candy that emerged looked like a ship's life preserver. Edward J. Noble bought the rights to it in 1913 for $2,900 and this was the beginning of the Mints Products Company which was to become Lifesavers. Lifesavers acquired the Beech-Nut Company, including their plant in Hamilton in 1931. The plan...t flourished for decades and by 1969 they were producing over a billion candies a year. Shown here, the fleet of vehicles outside the company plant in Hamilton helped to promote the Lifesaver candy. -------------------------------------------------- This book is part of the 3-book Vanished Hamilton package available for only $40 https://www.northshorepublishing.ca/boxing-week-2020.html See more

From the book The Prints of Time - Cars can be seen driving east-ward along King Street in September, 1955, one year before the city’s main thoroughfare, and several other streets, were changed to one-way only. The Chicken Roost, long a favourite eating spot, is visible on the north side of the street, while in the centre, Sir John A. MacDonald stands guard over the downtown core. Shot from the corner of John Street, the photograph illustrates the changing scenery, from the o...ld Canadian Bank of Commerce tower, to Northway’s ladies store to the Right House. ------------------------------------------------ www.northshorepublishing.ca See more

From the book Vanished Hamilton The B-Hive was a popular eating spot on the southwest corner of Highways 5 and 6 at Clappison’s Corners. Housed in a small building designed in the Art Deco style, the B-Hive was popular with local residents, but the restaurant’s most faithful customers gradually came to be the long distance truck drivers who needed a good hot meal.mashed potatoes, grilled pork chops, steak pie, a hot hamburg sandwich, beans on toast or of course, the B-Hive... chili. The demolition of the B-Hive Restaurant in the early 1980s marked the end of an era, the demise coming when such restaurants could not compete with the competition from the fast food chains and the modern service centres that became a feature of long distance travel. -------------------------------------------- This popular Hamilton book is part of the 3-book Vanished Hamilton series for only $40 PICK UP available (in Burlington until Dec. 23) get all three books here: https://www.northshorepublishing.ca/christmas-bonus-offers.

In honour of Remembrance Day, over the next two weeks we will post some photos with a local military theme. Please feel free to add any you think would be of interest to those in the community! ____________________________________________________________ From the book Hamilton at War: On the Home Front - Salvage drive... The Red Cross launched a salvage drive in September 1940, to collect all unwanted articles and materials. The following year the Lions Club announced their sponsorship of a scrap aluminum drive to be held in Hamilton. A Spectator reporter wrote: Before many months have gone by, three giant new bombers of an RAF squadron will wing their way over Germany carrying super-bombs for the destruction of Nazi factories and stores of war equipment. In order to construct the three bombers, Hamilton had to collect 150,000 worn out pots and pans. For every 8,000 pots or pans collected, enough aluminum to build a Spitfire was released. For every 50,000 pots or pans collected, enough aluminum to build a bomber was released. In August of 1941, Hamilton’s women were encouraged to participate in an experiment in salvage which resulted in an important contribution to the Empire war effort. They were asked to contribute worn out silk hosiery, with the hope that the result would be the accumulation of great quantities of silk, suitable for the fabrication of gunpowder bags. ---------------------------------------------------------- www.northshorepublishing.ca

From the book Memories of Wentworth The Collins Hotel has been a landmark building on King Street ever since 1841. This photograph shows the north side of King Street West looking past the hotel to other notable buildings in this part of Dundas.... Down the street is the Animal Hospital, which over the years was also the location of Brown’s Funeral Home as well as an insurance company, an auto dealership and a specialty shop. The little building in between the two is a jewelry store, but from 1915 to 1920 it served as the original location of Picone’s Food Market. ---------------------------------------------------------- Black Friday!
