When you think about it, exercise is kind of awesome. It is a tribute to what our bodies are capable of, a manifestation of strength and endurance. It is a privilege that we should all enjoy to the fullest. Unfortunately not all of us do. I have clients come to me confessing they ate garbage all weekend, drank booze, etc. and are expecting me to "punish" them in their workout. I hate that. I'm not going to train you to punish you for the ch...oices you made on the weekend. You're already doing the punishing for yourself. I want to celebrate your ability to move. I want to show you how strong you really are. I want to show you what you're capable of. When we hit a wall in the gym the only person to blame is ourselves. That blame can very easily turn into negativity or flat out fuck it-itis. Something we always forget when we’re in a bout of this fuck-it-itis is that exercise is supposed to be fun. Exercising is basically play for adults. Like kids do, on a playground. Except we don’t go to a playground, we go to the gym. We live in a country where we are blessed enough to perform physical labor for the sheer act of self-improvement. Think about that for a minute. You don’t have to lift heavy things in order to find food to eat, you don’t have to run away from something trying to kill you. You get to lift heavy things and run fast in order to make yourself better. It’s really a crazy thing. Throughout human history acts of physical exertion were needed to survive. Now we do them for fun. We live in a province where we have gyms OPEN and ready for us to come in and exercise, where many other provinces in Canada have their gyms shut down. I wake up every day incredibly grateful to be able to move the body I live in, to be able to work on self improvement. I am capable of amazing things. Repeat that. I am capable of amazing things. Lets go, 2021.

? I get it, life is tough right now; you think reaching for those cookies or picking up some takeout instead of eating your prepped meal will cheer you up. Emotional eating is extremely common, especially now: #covid15 anyone?... #Emotionaleating is something that frequently comes up as an issue with my clients. I thought I would share with you my response to one of my clients today. If you are craving a double-fudge sundae and I say you should meditate or take a walk instead, then I deserve to be laughed out of the room. That’s just too big a leap from what you really want at that moment. The frustration I am hearing from you seems to me to be more about the over-simplification of this deeply troubling issue (emotional eating). We experts need to recognize that if the tips and advice we throw around were that easy, you would have followed them already. However, changing the approach slightly by suggesting that you do just one other thing before you make the decision (of getting a blizzard to eat) gives you a fighting chance. I also recognize that if you are feeling depressed, it can be very difficult to come up with effective ways to interrupt destructive emotional eating in the moment. However, the need to take positive action of any kind while avoiding negative action is essential nonetheless. In order to have some realistic alternatives close at hand so you don't have to think of them in your more difficult moments, I suggest developing a list ahead of time of things that will distract you, improve your mood, or at a minimum get you doing anything but reaching for food. Perhaps you could write these options on small slips of paper and put them in a little box or jar. Then, when you need an alternative to compulsive eating, all you have to do is resolve to pick something and do it, no matter what it is. You can even turn it into a game where you get three picks, but you must do the last one you pull out of the jar. See more
