Summer has been HOT! Having the right watering strategy is crucial to keeping the yard healthy! Here are some tips to help your yard beat the heat!... For lawns: Watering for 10 to 20 min once a day is not always the best way to get good results with your lawn. Instead, try watering heavily for an hour or so once a week, and really saturate the soil deeper than it normally gets. This will encourage your grass to grow deeper roots into cooler moisture soil and will save you big on your water bill and make your lawn more drought resistant! *Note: It's better to encourage deeper root growth for your lawn in the spring or fall when it's cooler and less stressful heat wise. Of course, watering in the cool of the morning is far better than in the afternoon when a lot of your water will evaporate from the heat. For plants in hanging baskets and planters: Plants in hanging baskets or planters that are heavy drinkers (like Dahlias, Impatiens, and Pansies) often need water twice a day during hot spells. It's a good idea to check plants like these twice a day to make sure they stay hydrated! Adding a small layer of compost on top of your planter or basket can be a great help in keeping moisture in, and you'll enjoy the added bonus of extra nutrition for your plants! :) Some gardeners like using Soil Moist granular mixed in with potting soil to keep their plants damp longer. The little crystals are the same as the ones used to keep Christmas tree water basins moist longer! #funfact For plants in garden beds: New Perennials and Annuals need a good deep soak of water every 3 to 4 days when it's HOT. A 2 to 4 inch layer of compost or mulch also helps to lock in moisture. Established perennials can be watered less often. A weekly deep soak helps them get through the heat. It's wise to plant drought tolerant plants in places that receive more sun and heat like beside a white south facing wall or beside a brick wall that holds the heat. Planting the right plants in the right places saves the gardener a lot of time and money! Plant questions? Please send us a message or give us a call @ 403-526-3447!
