The Italian Cultural Centre in partnership with the Craft Council presents Personal and Material Geographies. The exhibition celebrates contemporary Craft in BC by showcasing the work of 23 BC artists, including 7 First Nations artists. This exhibition seeks to reappraise the word craft. Craft frequently is viewed as a creative medium which is based more on tradition rather than originality of technique or artistic achievement. However, this exhibition focuses on the tr...ansference of knowledge which characterizes craft education. Structurally, craft practice references community traditions and history, placing it in opposition to Fine Art which values individualism. This exhibition focus on craft as a powerful cultural force enabling cultural survival, the preservation of community and tradition. Featured artists include: Debra Sparrow, Meghann O’Brien, Debra Sloan, Marlene Liddle, Danielle Morsette, Bettina Matzkuhn, Annie Ross, Amy Gogarty, Veronica Waechter, Angelo Cavagnaro. Michelle Sirois-Silver, Barbara Heller, Lou Lynn, Kathereine Russell, Charleen Stroud, Melanie Thompson, Catherine Thomson, Monika Urbaniak Nancy Walker, Ocean Wilson, Kari Woo, and Christi York. The exhibit is free to visit, no appointment needed, and is on until December 11, Tuesday - Saturday from 10am-5pm, at the Italian Cultural Centre - Il Museo Art Gallery (3075 Slocan St, Vancouver). https://italianculturalcentre.ca//exh/personalandmaterial/ See more
