COMMON ALIENS: ART & SHORTS OUTDOOR FILM SCREENING On October 3, Atelier Céladon will present "Aquarium" by Omar Elhamy as part of their short film series. Seen through the lens of Vietnamese 12-year-old Quang, "Aquarium" uses a loose narrative framework. Via sounds, textures, spatiality and movement, fragmented encounters between characters evoke psychological experience similar to that of memory, distorted by experience and imagination. Set in a roadside motel and bar, the film highlights spatial and social isolation. This is compounded by the overlap of domestic and commercial space that Quang, his brother, and aging grandmother inhabit, as well as the ocular space of Quang's camera. In local language, he is called as the crier of the village. His sorrowful singing is attempted to express family’s gratefulness to the passing loved one, and awake the soul of the living children. As a father of 7 daughters, the dedicated musician has no hope to have a son to hand down the family’s career, and to sing for his death. The film is set in an ancient village of Northern Vietnam where the family traditional principles survive with the change of time."
