The natural treatment train isn’t rocket science, either, but it does have some very important components that are integral to its function. Rainwater experts Michelle Avis and Dr. Peter Coombes answer YOUR most frequently asked questions about rainwater harvesting! To sample our Rainwater Harvesting Course FOR FREE, click here: https://vergepermaculture.ca/rainwate... The first question in this 6-part series is why should I harvest rainwater?... The answer it turns out, is multidimensional. Here, Peter discusses the benefits of rainwater harvesting at a variety of scales. From your own health and that of your communities, to the positive externalities for biodiversity and climate change mitigation, rainwater harvesting has an abundance of benefits. Rainwater harvesting is an ancient practice that evolved over 1000s of years in most cultures. Early Egyptian, Indian, Korean, Chinese, and Roman settlements collected and stored rainwater to sustain human settlements, animals, and agriculture. These civilizationsand many others learned to harvest and store rainfall from different surfaces, and to manage catchment systems to ensure human health. Rainwater harvesting has had a successful track record in drought-prone regions for millennia, and time-tested practices were developed. However, the utility, efficiency, and sustainability of these practices has been mostly forgotten in the recent history of centralized water supplies. If you are interested in learning more about rainwater harvesting, be sure to check out our Essential Rainwater Harvesting Course, starting on January 20th, 2021.
