During the winter of 1932 and 1933, in an effort to crush a Ukrainian independence movement, Soviet police and collaborators confiscated food supplies in much o...f Ukraine. They denied starving people access to stored grain and barred them from travelling to find food. Millions of Ukrainians died of hunger in the famine. Over the next 50 years, the Soviet Union tried to suppress all evidence of this genocide, now known as the Holodomor. On Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day, let's remember the importance of the right to food as a human right and strengthen our resolve to decry those who have and continue to use food security as a weapon of war. Перший у свт пам'ятник жертвам Голодомору 1932-1933 рр. в Укран було вдкрито 23 жовтня 1983 року в Едмонтон (Альберта, Канада). Монумент було споруджено з... нцативи Едмонтонського вддлу Комтету укранцв Канади. Автор - Людмила Темертей з Монреаля, мати яко пережила Голодомор. Пам’ятник виконано у форм надрваного кола, що символзу навмисно розрваний життвий цикл. Зморен руки пднят у спротив та благають про закнчення тортур. На пам’ятнику мститься напис англйською та французькою мовами: "На вчну пам'ять мльйонам, хто загинув пд час голоду-геноциду, спричиненим в Укран радянським режимом у Москв у 1932 1933 роках. Стймо на сторож супроти тиран, насильства, не людяност". Ще до встановлення пам'ятника Посольство СРСР в Канад висловило свй протест.
