Love it when we get old photos and stories from Carnival's of the past! Check it out and thanks Uta Van Ziffle for sharing the photo! We weren't able to have a parade yet for this Winter Carnival. I thought you might get a kick out of seeing how I was preparing for the parade about 58 years ago. My sister (who has kept our family photos and archives since our parents passed away) just emailed me this photo of me when I was about 4 years old, preparing for (I think) the 196...3 Winter Carnival Parade. My parents, Albrecht and Christa von Gadenstedt had pushed Tronson Road further than it had gone before and built Adventure Bay Resort. It opened Summer of 1961 or 1962 and was a big deal at the time. For the parade, my mother, with some help, built a replica of the Adventure Bay mountain (hill) out of chicken wire and paper mache complete with trees and buildings carefully placed to match what was 'on the ground'. The attached photo was taken before it was all put together. The museum may have a photo of the complete float as we donated our Adventure Bay photo albums to the museum. In the photo, I'm 'painting' the dining/pub building. Our house is in the front and the lighthouse is behind me. The other buildings would have been the guest units along the lakeshore (now townhouses). Perhaps there was a staff house or two, but not much else on the whole mountain at the time. It was not a large float - the whole mountain was placed over my father's DKW jeep. There must have been some slots for seeing through because the hill went over the whole vehicle. I have a strong memory of seeing it in the parade is with snow gently falling. I think the float was in the parade for at least two years.
