A three year old Doberman presented to Brooker Ridge Animal Hospital for limping, draining abscess, and suspected foreign body in the paw. Over the last 10 months the patient has received multiple treatments, antibiotics, pain killer, and flushing by the regular vet but without improvement, then cytology and culturing performed by a referral veterinary facility who recommended also CT scan. Even with CT scan done the stick does not show up. CT scan report recommended amputation of a digit for severe panosteitis (bone inflammation). Surgery was performed at Brooker Ridge Animal Hospital by Dr. Zak Saleh who also followed up on the patient until complete recovery.

Blocked Cat! Feline Urologic Syndrome FUS is a common syndrome in male cats, it is known in veterinary parlance as a blocked tom or blocked cat. Urethra of male cats is narrow at the penile part particularly close to the tip. Any sediment, mucous, or stones coming from the urinary bladder passing through the urethra could block the penile urethra. If the flow of urine stops, waste products such as Blood Urea Nitrogen, Creatinine, Potassium build up in the blood stream c...ausing azotemia and hyperkalemia (increase potassium in the blood). It is known in veterinary parlance as a blocked tom or blocked cat. Cats that are blocked often show the following signs: Repeatedly visiting the litter box (noting or few drops of urine produced often mistaken for constipation) Straining Crying or howling Licking at the genitals Hiding Painful abdomen Vomiting If you notice your cat showing any of the above signs, get right in to see an emergency veterinary services. Dont wait as a few hours can make a big difference. Cats with urinary obstruction require immediate urinary catheterization to release the urine, any delay can result in kidney damage or death. The course after unblocking these cats is just unpredictable. Some cats are released from the hospital never to suffer another episode, while others will have repeated urinary obstructions in days, weeks, or years later. See more

A friendly reminder that the raccoon rabies which began in the Hamilton area after more than 25 years without a reported case - has also spread to the Niagara r...egion as of March. Please vaccinate your animals as we are likely to see more cases before things are brought under control again. #humananimalhealth See more
