Hanukkah is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. It is also known as the Festival of Lights. Happy Hannukah to all those beginning your celebrations this evening. http://ow.ly/TW1N50CIeMz #Hannukah #FestivalOfLights #VIRL

In Bryan Washington’s first novel, Memorial, the author chronicles the staid and comfortable relationship between Mike, a Japanese American chef at a Mexican restaurant and Benson, a Black day care teacher. When Mike suddenly is called to return to Japan to care for his ailing father just as his mother is due to arrive, Benson carves out his days in awkwardness with Mike’s Japanese mother, Mitsuko, whom he’s just met. In quiet scenes that show us how we work simultaneously t...o connect and disconnect from each other, Washington’s story resides as much in what isn’t said as in what is. In the end, we learn how the history of the ones we love can simultaneously restrict and free us. Bryan Washington talks with author and scholar, Rinaldo Walcott (Black Like Who?), about the writing and reception of Memorial and what his characters reveal about modern love. Register and tune in LIVE on December 10 at 12-1pm EST or watch the replay at http://ow.ly/RIJr50CHnIy #OnePageLit #BlackLikeWho #VIRL #LibrariesTransform
