VicPD Celebrates National Restorative Justice Week Victoria, BC Today marks the beginning of Restorative Justice Week across Canada and internationally. Restorative Justice is an approach to justice that seeks to repair the damage done by crime and conflict in our community. The program emphasizes a victim-centered approach which seeks accountability from offenders and a non-adversarial means of making things right. The goal of Restorative Justice is to reach meaningful, ...satisfying, and fair outcomes through inclusion, open communication, and truth-telling. At VicPD, we are grateful for the great work of our partners at Restorative Justice Victoria. Since 2007, VicPD has been working closely with Restorative Justice Victoria to achieve outcomes outside of the traditional court system, or in conjunction with that system. We refer over 60 files to Restorative Justice Victoria every year. The most common files referred to Restorative Justice Victoria are theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and assault. During Restorative Justice Week VicPD thanks Restorative Justice Victoria for their valued contribution to community safety. File: 20-44176 Victims Sought After Hotel Arson Victoria, BC Detectives with VicPD’s Major Crimes Unit are asking to speak with victims after an arson at the Capital City Centre Hotel last week. Investigators believe they have not yet been in contact with everyone who was injured in the incident and need to speak with them.... Shortly before 8:30 p.m. on November 5th, Patrol officers responded to a suite at the Capital City Centre Hotel in the 1900-block of Douglas Street after a man in crisis called police. While on scene, officers witnessed a fire within the suite which prompted an emergency police entry. Officers evacuated nearly 100 tenants from the building and Victoria Fire Department firefighters attended and fought the fire. During the evacuation, officers located and apprehended the man who they believe was responsible for starting the fire. Matthew Brian Petker, 32, has been charged with arson with disregard for human life, and arson causing property damage. Five people, including the accused, were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Several others, including officers on scene, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries related to smoke inhalation. Detectives are seeking any additional victims from the fire on November 5th to come forward at this time. Q3 Report Now Available We have just published our Q3 Report. The Q3 Report, which covers July, August and September of 2020, was presented to the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board, as well as to Esquimalt Council on Monday, and to Victoria Council this morning. Highlights in this report include results from our 2020 Community Survey, as well as the recently released StatsCan data on Crime Rate and Crime Severity Index. The Crime Rate and Crime Severity Index data is the la...test available, which includes data from 2019 and updates to data from previous years.
