Today, the federal gov't reintroduced proposed changes to the Judges Act aimed at ensuring that all newly appointed provincial superior court judges participate... in continuing education in sexual assault law and social context. The goal is to ensure judges hearing sexual assault matters will have the necessary training to fairly and properly decide matters, without the influence of myths and stereotypes. The Bill also proposes to enhance the transparency of decisions by requiring judges to provide written reasons, or to enter them into the record, when deciding sexual assault matters. https://bit.ly/332 #sexualassault #victims #survivors #judges #criminal #justicesystem See more

Pleased to see in today's #ThroneSpeech Justin Trudeau and his government will advance a National Action Plan on #GenderBasedViolence This issue impacts us all ...& costs lives. Did you know, in Canada, on average, a woman is killed every 6 days by her intimate partner? And in 2018 alone, a woman or girl was killed every 2.5 days. https://bit.ly/3j0K6Tl #vaw #victims #VictimServices See more

The Ontario Government has announced new educational resources to raise awareness about #sexualexploitation and #humantrafficking among children and youth. Traf...fickers often target very young people and groom them for #sextrafficking. The new tools will educate youth on how to spot the danger signs, teach them the skills to avoid it, and where to get help if they need it. #KnowHumanTrafficking https://bit.ly/3joYg0i See more

#HighwayPirates: guns, drugs and human trafficking in your own backyard. Proximity to the GTA and easy highway access make small urban centres like Peterborough and large rural centres like Brighton, Port Hope and Cobourg attractive destinations for human traffickers.

This story is part of a Metroland-wide series on drugs, guns and human trafficking happening along the major highways that run through our communities. For more on this topic visit #highwaypirates guns, drugs and human trafficking.
