DID YOU KNOW?: What we see is made up of light reflected from the objects and scenes we look at. However, because the cornea at the front of the eye is curved, it bends the light as it enters the eye, meaning the image is upside down when it hits the retina at the back of the eye. When the brain interprets the image it turns it back the right way up so we see the world correctly. In an experiment in the 1950's, Austrian Professor Theodor Erismann asked his assistant Ivo Kohler to wear a pair of goggles that made him see upside down. Fascinatingly, Kohler’s brain adapted and he began to see the world right side-up through the goggles within about a week. The landmark study is still widely referenced today, such as in the work Sachse et al. on Visual Perception in 2017.

Happy Father’s Day from VICTORIA EYE!
DID YOU KNOW? Newborn babies see the world in black, white, AND RED. While newborns do see black, white, and shades of gray, they can also detect red objects against a gray backdrop. The reason why they can’t see more colors is because the cones in their eyes. The photo-receptor cells are responsible for picking up colors and are too weak to detect them. Those cells quickly get stronger. After about two months, babies can distinguish between red and green, and a few weeks later they can tell the difference between blue and yellow.
