Have you cleaned or inspected your chimney this year? Regular chimney cleaning and inspections are key in chimney fire prevention. Ensure your chimney is inspected by a WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) business. Here are some Chimney fire facts https://www.csia.org/chimneyfires.html

With both departments (Victoria & Salmon Cove / Perry’s Cove) adding new members to our ranks, proper training for these members is critical for success on the fireground. These members are committed to their training and are focused on completing the NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level One course. This course is the building block for all Fire training in North America. Our course is broken into a mix of 4 weekends (8 hrs per day) along with weekly Thursday evenings (3 hrs a sitting). Currently they are on their second weekend. The final weekend they will be conducting live fire training at the Training Ground in Winterton. Special thank you to our instructors & students for taking the time to ensure you receive high quality instruction. #yourfireservice #vvfd1975 #professionallystaffedbyvolunteers

This evening we received a emergency call of a chimney fire in the rural cabin area of Swansea. Due to the nature of the emergency with the high potential of a chimney fire spreading to the structure, along with the location being in a non hydrant area three Fire Engines/Pumpers were deployed. Engine 245 & Pumper 242 from Victoria station along with Pumper 342 from Salmon cove / Perry’s Cove station. Fortunately the fire was contained to the chimney and did not spread. We would like to remind residents of the importance of chimney maintenance. All units have been placed back in service and our members continue to participate in our weekly Thursday night drill. #mutualaid #vvfd1975 #yourfireservice

Happy New Year to you all! As 2020 ends it is fitting to update our residents on your Fire Department’s Activities for 2020. As we hear over and over how the Covid 19 Pandemic changed our day-to-day lives the fire service was not spared. It caused training opportunities, events along with much needed dept fundraisers to be cancelled. Some of these cancelled events include the Fire & Emergency Services Fire School, NL Association of Fire Services Convention, Firefighters Ball,... Advanced training opportunities with Fire Training Associates from New Brunswick, our in-house weekly Texas Holdem Card Game along with other planned fundraising activities. At the beginning of this pandemic, it was unknown the amount of destruction it would bring. Initially our crew was directed to only participate in emergency service on a as needed basis. This was done in an effort to control the virus and ensure it would not be spread amongst your fire service. As the crisis progressed, we transitioned back to day-to-day routine, training, learning and advancing. With all this being said our 29-member department are pleased to update our residents with these statistics. Retirement of two members who moved over to our Honorary Firefighter Crew Recruitment of four new members to the team for active duty 4838 total volunteer hours 42 Incident responses (1290 hours) 7 Motor Vehicle Collisions 3 Medical First Response 1 Vehicle Fire 8 Ambulance Assists 7 Wildland (Forest Fires) 2 Chimney Fires 2 Structure Fires 11 Residential Alarms 1 Hazardous Material Incident 47 Training Events (1155 hours) 106 Meetings, Community Events, General Maintenance (1520 hours) 3 Certificate courses, NFPA 1042 Hazardous Materials Awareness, Advanced First Aid for Firefighters, Alternative Fuel Vehicles (873 hours) Over this past year our team met some of the most challenging tasks any firefighter would be expected to carry out. Our members rose to the task and excelled at any job that needed to be completed. I am privileged to work with such a Professional Group of Volunteers. On behalf of The Victoria Volunteer Fire Department, I wish you and your Families a Happy & Prosperous New year, Chief Justin Parsons Victoria Fire Professionally Staffed by Volunteers
