COMPETITION 2020 TAP SPECIALIST: DANNY NIELSEN Danny Nielsen is one of the most sought out tap artists living in Canada today. He currently moved back to his hometown of Calgary, AB where he teaches, performs, judges, choreographs and travels abroad. Danny began his training with Gail Scott and furthered his knowledge of tap dancing by studying with the youth ensemble MADD Rhythms Canada and at various tap festivals in the States and Canada. For the past 3 years, Danny has b...een touring with Vancouver based dance company Radical System Art (Shay Kuebler). The show entitled Telemetry features Nielsen in a role created exclusively for him. The show has enthralled audiences across the globe having performed in prestigious venues such as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Place Des Arts in Montreal, the White Bird Dance Series in Portland, the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, and the Schritmacher Festival in Germany to name a few. From 2010-2016, Danny lived in Vancouver, BC. He spent 2 years as the ‘Artist in Residence’ with the Vancouver Tap Society and emerged on to the International tap scene as a soloist. He has taught and performed at various tap festivals in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, the United Sates and Canada. In 2012, Danny was the recipient of the Santa Aloi Award from the Scotiabank Dance Centre. He used the grant to create and direct his first full length production Love.Be.Best.Free, which toured BC for a month in February of 2017. Television credits include the worldwide broadcast of the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies and the opening number for the 2008 Jerry Lewis Telethon choreographed by Chloe Arnold in Las Vegas, NV.

COMPETITION 2020 BALLET ADJUDICATOR: NICOLE CARON Nicole Caron was born in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and grew up in Vancouver, BC. She received her training at the Richmond Academy of Dance as well as at Canada’s National Ballet School, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, and the American Ballet Theatre. She danced professionally as a principal dancer for the Alberta Ballet for 16 seasons as well as for the Banff Festival Arts for several years. Nicole has toured and perf...ormed across the globe to countries including Canada, USA and 3 tours to China. She has guest performed for several special events including the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games and The Grandstand show at the Calgary Stampede. Some of Nicole’s favourite roles include the title role in Carmen, Desdemona in Othello, Helena in A Midsummer’s Night Dream, principal dancer in Balanchine’s Rubies, Serenade, Allegro Brillante and Who Cares?, Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Kitri in Don Quixote, Stomper in In the Upper Room, and She in Balletlujah! In 2015 and 2017, Nicole was invited to be rehearsal director for Alberta Ballet’s Nutcracker children's cast in Calgary, choreography by Edmund Stripe. Nicole has been teaching ballet, pointe, body conditioning, repertoire and adjudicating across Canada for over 10 years. Nicole also practices and enjoys yoga, receiving her 200 hour Yoga teaching certification in 2010 as well as her Progressing Ballet Technique certification in 2018.

ADJUDICATOR UPDATE!! We're thrilled to have TANNER PLECAS joining us as the Jazz Specialist for our 2020 Competition. Tanner is a Vancouver born and raised dance artist. He began his formal dance training under the direction of Rachael Poirier. During his training, Tanner competed at National and International levels, and studied extensively in as many styles of dance as he could. For three consecutive years, Tanner was the BC provincial champion in the stage dance category. ...In his senior years of studio training Tanner received several regional and international competition titles, including: New York City Dance Alliance’s Regional Outstanding Dancer; placing in the top five senior males at the finals in New York, as well as convention and workshop scholarships. Tanner began his professional career dancing with Patrick Roberge Productions when he was in high school. Upon graduation, Tanner danced with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as a dancer and aerial silk flyer, touring around Europe and the Caribbean. Upon returning to Vancouver, Tanner continued his professional training through Vancouver’s contemporary dance education institution Modus Operandi, where he was granted a full scholarship for his final two years. During his time in the program, Tanner collaborated on the creation of several short dance films, held principal and soloist roles in countless creations, and interpreted the work of many of Vancouver’s contemporary choreographers. One of Tanner’s most memorable high profile events was performing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies. He performed with Sarah McLachlan as a member of the professional cast alongside Ballet BC & The Alberta Ballet, which was choreographed by Jean Grand-Maître. In 2010 he also had the privilege of being a part of Vessel, the premier full length piece of contemporary dance company, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre. More recently, Tanner was invited to be an artist with Alberta Ballet, for the creation of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Dancing once again alongside Sarah McLachlan with choreography by Jean Grand-Maître. Since retiring from dancing professionally, Tanner has been a full-time choreographer and dance instructor. He is passionate about building strong technique in his dancers, and providing them with an understanding of what can be achieved through hard work and commitment. His award-winning choreography is remembered for its athleticism and inventive perspectives. Tanner is thrilled to be returning to Canada, after a sabbatical abroad in Scotland. See more

2019 Competition Adjudicator for Stage Dance - ALEXIS WHATLEY Alexis’ journey in dance and the performing arts started in Alberta then led to further training in Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles and New York. For the past 20 years, her career in the performing arts has seen her both on and off the international stage as a dancer, choreographer, instructor and adjudicator. She has had the privilege to work with many great artists and organizations such as Terry Brock, Princes...s Cruise Lines, Legends Alive, Champagne Entertainment, David Atkins Enterprises of Australia (2010 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremonies with Michael Bublé), the Vancouver Whitecaps, the CFL’s BC Lions dance team, the Felions as well as numerous other television and local musical theatre and dance productions most recently The Orpheum’s 90th birthday celebration and Translink’s Tap Happy campaign. Currently Alexis is a regular adjudicator for various dance competitions held annually in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. She is in her fifth season as coach and choreographer of the National Lacrosse League’s uber-talented Vancouver Stealth dance team, the Bombshells. Alexis resides in Vancouver where she is recognized as an energetic and humorous instructor, sharing her experience and enthusiasm with dancers of all ages. Her latest venture into becoming a certified Pilates instructor serves as a great compliment to her teaching and continues to inform her practice as an educator even further. Alexis’ classes focus on biomechanics, hard work, confidence, and of course, fun! See more

Wow!! What a wonderful first three days of our 2018 competition festival! We've seen great concepts and costumes, wonderful choreography and AMAZING DANCING!!
