Happy New Year! I don’t know if I’ve ever been as happy to say goodbye to a year as 2020 ( )- and by the sounds of last night’s fireworks, I’m not alone But I do like to reflect on the highlights and positives from every year. And since practicing gratitude makes me happy; here are some things I’m grateful to have gained from 2020:... Stress management tools Self compassion Perspective A re-alignment of priorities Time exploring our province Appreciation for what we have Time to connect with loved ones Creative kitchen time Now excuse me while I drink my hot apple cider and watch cartoons with my tiny humans What have you gained from this past year?

Christmas is almost here, and what a better way to ease into the holidays than to put some festive snacks into the lunchbox! These Santa Skewers are a perfectly magical balanced snack: 1. On a toothpick, first add a green grape, then a slice of banana and a strawberry.... 2. Top it with a small cube of cheese or a small piece of banana Best served to school- aged children with a little direction on how to safely eat from the toothpick #santasnack #safetyfirst #christmassnack

Have you ever noticed how your body feels when you’ve been well-hydrated? I frequently get asked about how much water we should be drinking, and the answer is: it varies! Hydration depends on:... body mass sodium intake age exercise level/ perspiration fibre intake the weather/ your environment Most of us are dehydrated most of the time, and a general guideline for fluid intake is 6-8 250mL cups per day A great way to tell what’s right for you is to be pro-active by aiming to stay ahead of getting thirsty, and pay attention to how you feel when your well-hydrated Have you found your general sweet spot for hydration goals?

Did you know that there are still 5 days left to get 50% back in PC Optimum points if you book a private consult for any time in 2021? Each private nutrition service starts with a free 15-minute consult to determine what service would be best for you Then, the initial 60-minute consult is where we review your food intake, your lifestyle questionnaire and make sure that we are on the same page to meeting your goals ... After the initial consult, I usually recommend a 30-minute follow up and a 30-minute Shop with the Dietitian (to look at food labels and find the best products for you) Then, you can come back for regular 15-minute check-ins or 30-minute follow-ups: whatever is going to work best for you! Send me a message or visit www.bookadietitian.ca to arrange your free, initial phone consult

What does a balanced plate for a 4-year-old look like? fruit &/or veggies protein carbohydrate... at least one food I know they’ll enjoy dessert (if they know it’s there ) We don’t strive for perfection, we aim for the guidelines & keep in mind that meals should also be pleasurable Sanity-savers are also helpful- that’s why I also only plan to cook one item from scratch on busy weeknights and rely on left-overs or partially-prepared items to complete the plate Wanna guess what was actually eaten? #dominiondietitian #whatdietitianskidseat #balancedplate

I have diabetes and I want to know what I can have for snacks -this is a request I get a-lot! Thankfully, the formula for a balanced snack for someone with diabetes is the same as I’d recommend for anyone: be sure to include fibre + protein The fibre can be a whole grain cracker, fruit, vegetable, or anything else with fibre ... The protein can be a boiled egg, hummus, nuts, nut butter, meat, cheese or yogurt (any yogurt will do, but Greek and Skyr have the most protein per serving) If you’re interested in learning more about how to eat healthy to help manage diabetes, I have an online workshop coming up on January 19th at 1:00. If the time doesn't work for you, you can watch the recording any time as long as you register ahead of time https://dietitianwebinars.ca//living-well-with-diabetes-mi

Although this Christmas looks different than many of us had hoped for or from what we’re used to, it’s important to continue our food holiday traditions If you’re used to celebrating with large meals, pies, cookies or fruitcake, I hope you take the time to make the foods that bring you joy and pleasure This year, more than any other, it’s so important to do what we can to be grateful, celebrate and find joy ... Leftovers can be shared, frozen, re-imagined into new recipes or donated to a neighbour or friend So decorate, set the table with the fancy cutlery, bake that pie or cook up a cooked dinner with all the trimmings My favourite food over the holidays is the turkey dinner- the stuffing, the dessert and the cranberry sauce, specifically What’s your favourite thing to eat during the holidays?
