Santa has come early for me! I received an email saying the winners gallery for WPPI Second Half Competition was up. I thought to myself "oh I'll head over and see who's won what this year...and oh, wish I'd entered". So imagine my surprise when I see that I managed to score a FIRST PLACE in Portrait Creative with a GOLD Award, which was the highest scoring image this round. Apparently in the midst of the chaos of early fall I found the time to enter a few images and then... completely forgot about it. Which is so much better than the opposite experience of waiting on pins and needles for results! And I also picked up 3 Silver awards which is amazing too. https://www.wppiawards.com/hoe/winners/2020WPPISecondHalf

"Why would a human drink milk meant for dogs?" one of the judges asked. Weird right? But humans drinking milk meant for cows is not weird? ... Are you sure about that? This image titled "Barker's Dairy" was accepted into the 2020 Ontario Regional Image Salon as an out of province entry. Thanks to Meg from Wallflower Sanctuary for being a great model!

Sometimes I make creative images for competitions and then forget to post them...for years! So here's a throwback to fall 2018 when beautiful Holly stood still while we taped leaves to her for 1.5 hours. This image, titled "Canadiana", scored a Silver award in the January 2019 Portrait Masters Awards.

I was so honored to photograph The Lieutenant Governor of NB, Brenda Murphy. The LG is the representative of the Queen, and she looks every inch of it.

A creative shoot in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The list of Canadian victims is long. Estimates have put the number of indigenous women and girls who have disappeared or been murdered since the 1970s at up to 4,000, but the true number may be impossible to establish. This is a national tragedy. #MMIWG... Model: Neba Denny Makeup Sam Wilson

This past mother's day was the first without my mom. She was such a big part of why I do what I do, so in honor of her memory, I gave away a photo shoot. I'm so happy for you to meet Chrissy! My mother Melanie was so grateful for the wonderful care she received at Hospice House Fredericton. I know she would have approved of my choice. "I am the mother of two incredible children, Ella and Ethan, they are 7 & 11 years old. They are an absolute blessing, they keep me on my to...es and keep me going when I start to slow down. I am also a nurse at Hospice Fredericton. I started my career in maternity/obstetrics, I then took a sharp turn into palliative/hospice care and I’ve never looked back! I will start by saying what a privilege it is to have a career in palliative care. For anyone who isn’t exactly sure what that is, palliative care is a type of care that relieves symptoms of a disease or disorder, whether or not it can be cured. Hospice is a specific type of palliative care for people who likely have 6 months or less to live. So... hospice care is always palliative, however not all palliative care is hospice care! Anytime I discuss my job with people, I almost always get asked Is it sad? That must be so depressing my answer is... yes and no. I genuinely enjoy caring for people who need it most, for people who are at the end of their journey, for people who can’t manage their symptoms on their own, for people who are scared, for people who have no one and for families who can no longer take care of their loved ones. I feel accomplished when I can provide comfort, safety and dignity to my patients and their families. On the other hand, yes, of course it’s sad, people are losing their loved ones, that’s never a happy thing, I don’t believe you are ever really ready to say goodbye to your loved ones... I think we accept that it’s time to let go, but are we really ever ready? I don’t think so... A large part of my job is comforting families, we have to communicate with them at a level they’re comfortable with, in a very gentle, caring and compassionate way. We are guiding them through the last moments of their loved ones life, and sometimes that’s very challenging. Making special, everlasting bonds with families, like the West family, is another reason why I love what I do. I am so fortunate to work with some of the most amazing, caring, giving, understanding, compassionate and selfless people I have ever met, which makes my job just that much better!"
