Mourning Secondary Losses The end of the summer can mean changing schedules, which can bring secondary losses to light. This can reopen emotional wounds and bring unexpected grief. Secondary losses can be just as significant of the death of your loved one and represent the loss of that person in other roles in your life. Maybe you always received photos of the first day of school, or your spouse was always there to weed the garden or mow the yard. The realization of the loss ...of your loved one in these roles may be sudden, but these feelings are natural. Secondary losses can be physical, such as a loss of a house because you can't afford to live there anymore, or psycho-social, such as the loss of a relationship. Secondary losses also include bedrock changes in your expectations and beliefs of the world around you which had been established when your loved one was alive. This can range from the family camping trip that was planned for next summer, thinking that he'll always be your rock, picturing walking your daughter down the aisle or imagining growing old in rocking chairs on the back porch. Part of the grieving process means identifying and mourning these types of secondary losses from your loved one's death. "Over time, identify the secondary losses that come to you as a result of your loved one’s death so that you can mourn themthey are part of your bereavement," says Dr. Therese A. Rando, (BCETS, BCBT). "Work to revise your assumptive world insofar as elements of it are no longer valid or have been shattered because of your loved one’s death."
