In 2015, the VIDF presented Vital Few by Company 605 - a collaborative undertaking utilizing mechanisms of constant codependence and interrelation between the dancers. Each performer’s own distinct expression, movement, and choice making weaves together to collectively build the moving sculpture of the group body, the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Acknowledging both an autonomy and responsibility to the group, the struggle of coexistence within the set parameters and finite space continuously informs the content of this hyper connected dance. Happy Holidays from the VIDF! We wish you health and happiness throughout the holidays and new year. As we come to the end of our 20th anniversary year, dance’s ability to provoke reflection on the human condition feels more poignant than ever. We believe that the call to simplify our mode of existence and to work collectively with a sense of responsibility to one another, is answered, in part, by the truth of the body and the communion of performance. We are thankful for the... artists, donors, members, funders and greater public that have supported the VIDF and celebrated contemporary dance with us over the past 20 years. In 2018, the VIDF presented Folding by Shen Wei Dance Arts. The work conjures-up a dream-like, even surreal world, that is at once ancient and timeless. Dancers glide onto the stage space and amass as though suddenly called to partake in an ancient ritual, familiar and yet unknown. A downstage pendulum, barely moving, marks the slow unraveling of time. The costumes, white makeup, and glowing white floor, heighten the dance’s sense of mystery and ritual. A seminal work, Folding, is quite simply, a masterpiece. In 2017, the VIDF presented Paradise by Dairakudakan . Director Akaji Maro shared these thoughts on paradise: The origin of word paradise is from an old Persian word and it means enclosed garden. In a hot desert, a garden would have been paradise. At that time, I think there was an idea that the world was tough and hellish and to contrast that, the idea of paradise must have been created. When humans face something insufferable, we try to work it out. For example, ...our brain produces endorphins and transforms pain to pleasure. In other words, pain can transform to paradise within our body. Paradise can be called a product of perseverance. How you work around pain and how you seek pleasure can be limitless. People won’t feel the fighting in a war when they are having a good time in an opium den. From the outside, something may look miserable; from the inside, maybe it’s paradise.
