You made it to Friday! Congratulations. It’s gonna be a great day. But also... I sent this picture to my best friend on Monday. A photo of me having to throw on... sunglasses for baseball practice to try and cover an unexpectedly hard day where out of nowhere I found myself crying for the better part of four hours for reasons I couldn’t even put my finger on. After a string of good days, I had a bad one, and the emotion of pushing through hard things broke through and all the emotions came pouring out. I used to try and push those feelings away. Tried to white-knuckle shake myself out of it and tough-talk myself into being strong, hard or whatever. Now I just let the feelings come on down like they’re a contestant on Price is Right and let it flow. There’s this weird thing about social media in that so much of what you see is the good, but there’s no reality in that. Reality is good and hard. Real life is a non-linear experience that has struggle and progress coexisting, and hard days showing up like an unexpected out-of-town guest. It happening doesn’t make me weak or less, it makes me human. Just like you. It’s been a fantastic week, full of things to celebrate, opportunities that make me so excited, conversations that filled my soul and experiences that make me believe in the guarantee of the unbelievably good things ahead. And, I also cried for four hours on Monday. I sat in those feelings and asked why they were here. Didn’t push them away but accepted that the journey of this life comes with the reality that both can exist. All to say that if you’ve had a week with an interruption of emotion, an unexpected cry, a momentary wonder of what the heck is actually happening here, that doesn’t make you weak, less, not enough or not strong, it makes you human. Normal. Just like me. Feel all the feels. Welcome and process the emotion. Then throw on some sunglasses and get after the day. Your hard times are simply a reflection of your humanity, a signal of you growing into something bigger, something new. Here’s to an amazing Friday, full of hope and optimism for what comes next. If a hard day comes, remember: it’s normal, and tomorrow will be better.
