We received a call for a loud rumbling noise coming from the mechanical room. The customer was frightened by the sound thinking that the furnace or water heater was going to "blow up." We arrived on scene and were able to mimic the noise for the client. It turned out to be the condensate pump for the furnace. Days prior, they had their furnace serviced by another company. Guess they overlooked this component which pumps the water into a drain created by the furnace. What is an expansion tank? An expansion tank is designed to handle the thermal expansion of water as it heats in the water heater, preventing excessive water pressure. If the water pressure gets too high it can damage valves in plumbing fixtures, joints in supply pipes and the water heater itself. From the box, they are pre-charged at 40 PSI. Depending on your water pressure that is inside your home, the expansion tank should be equivalent in pressure.
