Tonight's ballots were cast using the "fair ranked voting" system. In this system, voters were asked to rank their choices of nominee from 1 to 4, with number 1 being their first choice, and number 4 being their last choice. If the first choice indicated on a ballot was not elected for the first position, that ballot's choice as number 1, becomes it's choice for the second position, and so on, until that ballot's 1 choice nominee is elected. If the ballot's number 1 choice is... indeed elected to the number 1 spot, that ballot's number 2 choice, is then considered for the number 2 position. After considering all of the number 1 choices on the ballot's cast tonight, there was a tie between Dan McNeil and Bill Marchant, both receiving 31 votes. This effectively means that the two three year term positions, were won by Bill Marchant and Dan McNeil. Moving onto the third position, in the fair ranked voting system, the winner is calculated by considering the third ranked choice of ballots with Dan McNeil and Bill Marchant as the number 1 and 2 choices, the 2nd ranked choice of ballots with Dan McNeil as the number 1 choice but not Bill Marchant as number 2, the 2nd ranked choice of ballots with Bill Marchant as the number 1 choice but not Dan McNeil as number 2, and the number 1 choice of ballots with neither Dan McNeil, or Bill Marchant as number 1. After two painstaking hours of doing this and comparing results, all three scrutineers have agreed that the ballots indicate that Michele Stephens received 47 votes, and Philip McRae received 42 votes, making Michele Stephens the third elected commissioner for the Village. Thank you to all of the residents who came out tonight to participate in this voting process, and to those who helped.

Still waiting on the results of tonight’s election, but there was an unprecedented level of voter turnout from residents. Each scrutineer is completing their own individual count right now.. Once finished. All three counts will be compared to ensure accuracy. Once the numbers are confirmed, the results will be shared immediately here. Thank you to everyone who came out to participate in this process. Stay tuned

It has come to our attention, that due to current (and anticipated changes coming later today) regarding Covid19 restrictions for public gatherings, there is a chance that everyone who would like to exercise their right to vote for the village commissioner positions at tonight’s AGM, may not be able to do so safely. At this time, we have made the decision to separate the meeting tonight, from the voting process. In regards to the meeting, we currently have 20 seats available... to the public, and ask that anyone wishing to express a specific concern in person, contact the village office at 295-3666 as soon as possible to have a seat reserved in your name. There is a chance that number will be further limited, and possibly that the doors may be closed to public all together depending on this afternoons anticipated announcement from the province. That said, the meeting will be live-streamed to the Village Facebook Page, starting at 6pm tonight, and will be be made available on a public YouTube page afterwards for those without Facebook. If for some reason the live stream does not work as planned at 6pm, the meeting will also be recorded, and will be made available following it’s adjournment later this evening for viewing prior to voting. Voting will now take place tomorrow, Friday, November 20th, between the hours 5pm and 8pm. Residents are asked to do so one at a time at the Village Office at the Courthouse at 495 Chebucto St, Baddeck. Masks and physical distancing will be mandatory, and you will be asked to come in the front door, fill out your ballot, and exit the side door, unless access to the ramp is required coming in, in which case accommodations will be made. All voting will take place in the presence of two scrutineers, who will tally and announce the results immediately following the closing time of 8pm. Elected, and/or re-elected Commissioners will be sworn in at next week's Village meeting (date and time TBA) Thank you for understanding this last minute change while we work to respect everyone’s right to be able to vote, but also do so with safety as a priority.

Voting is open now (until 8:00pm) to Village residents at the courthouse in Baddeck for 3 positions of Commissioner. Please remember to wear a mask & maintain physical distancing. Voters must be over the age of 18 and live within the current Village boundaries. It’s a dark night in Baddeck and the stairs entering and exiting the building are dark in spots so please be careful, take your time, and ask for help if necessary! We appreciate everyone’s input. Results will be posted as soon as they are counted and announced by the scrutineers administering the election.

Do you reside in an older home and are currently on the Village water system? Did you know that some older homes may still have a lead service line or older plumbing which can contain lead and copper in connections in the piping? In the last thirty years we have learned that both lead and copper can have an adverse effect on a person’s health. The Village drinking water is tested annually for lead and copper, with no lead or copper showing in any of the distribution pipin...g or naturally occurring in the well water. If you are concerned that there may be a lead or copper service line or lead or copper in your plumbing, you can contact the Village of Baddeck to receive a free test kit. This testing will be done within the month of September. We have limited kits so it will be based on a first come, first serve basis. If interested, please contact Joe Baker, Public Works department at (902) 295-0123 to have a test kit delivered.

Fire fighters are currently on the scene of a structure fire at High St. in Baddeck. Water utility customers in the High St. area may notice a slight discoloration in water while fire fighters continue to work. This is expected at this time, and your water still remains safe to drink and use. At this point, no conservation measures are required, but please continue to check here for updates.

Please remember to place all wipes in the trash bin where they belong. No wipe is flushable, even if the container says so. The only thing that should be flushed is human waste and toilet paper. Anything else can cause sewer system back ups which are costly to clean and repair. Wipes, feminine hygiene products, condoms, paper towel, hair and dental floss do not break down and can get wrapped around impellers of pumps which then need to be pulled and repaired which is a cost to tax payers. Please place all waste in the garbage instead of flushing it.

Today is #WorldWaterDay. In this time of uncertainty know that staff are still working to provide safe, clean drinking water to the community. You can do your part by always conserving water. All the little songs everyone is doing while washing their hands, while a great idea to help judge an appropriate amount of time, can also waste a lot of water if the tap is left running for the duration. Cooperation is greatly appreciated. UN-Water

[Edit: Feb 18 - 9:08am - Leak has been found - Customers can resume regular usage] Earlier this evening our system alerted us to a potential slow water leak. At this point, customers are not likely to experience any change in pressure; however, we do ask that consumption be limited when possible. Village employees are monitoring levels and will continue the physical search for any potential leaks during daylight. We will let you know when the issue has been resolved. Thank you for your cooperation and help to spread the word.
