Shelley, as you saw in my earlier post, was here again today to rent Bella, and finished this fabulous quilt, which she started quilting yesterday. The quilt is for her husband, and he'd decided he wanted it bigger than the original dimensions - the grey background with no border. So does Shelley add a couple of plain borders and call it done? Nope! Check out the star blocks she added at corners and halfway points on the borders!... Now take a look at the quilting! Leaves in a lovely wavy layout - changing direction with each row - and echoing around the cheeky little gnomes! I think we can call that a success! Julia of @briarhilldesigns came to rent Bella today, it's been a little while (ahh, Covid) but she's rocking those swirls! I'd had a fight with a vicious piano stool resulting in the loss of a chunk of my finger, but those adorable bunnies (not to mention the hedgehogs) soon distracted me enough to stop the floor wobbling, and we had a lovely day, listened to some great music, got some great quilting done, planned a little more! Sometimes you have a quilt top, a backing, a longarming pattern, and together they work their magic! Quilt synergy? Serendipity? Barb Archer pieced this beautiful, big, scrappy top, chose the pattern (isn't it incredible with the backing!), and the thread colour. The result is a fun, fabulous quilt which was really hard to give back! Enjoy the pictures, and please don't forget to "like" them!

Helen just completed her certification at the end of October, and here she is, using her complementary 2 hours, and quilting her first quilt on the lovely Bella! This Bear's Paw quilt was pieced by her friend, and it is piecing perfection. Helen has chosen to use a pantograph and honestly she's quilting like a pro! First time! She's advancing her quilt, matching up her rows, basting her sides and quilting a great meander, without any help from me (although I'm here to help ...if she needs it.) Should probably mention, the man in the red suit is coming soon, and Violet Quilts does have Gift Certificates! When I'm thinking up what magic to work on a quilt I look for inspiration in either the quilt pattern itself, or the fabrics the quilter has chosen. In this case Carolyn's clamshells and many of the fabrics screamed "bubbles" to me - so bubbles it was!!! Jill came to do her Certification on Bella recently, which was great fun, and look at the free motion ferns she was doing by the end of the class! She also had a go at using pantos, where you follow a printed pattern from the back of the machine, which is great for those days when you have a quilt to be quilted, a time slot booked, but you might not be "feeling it" enough to come up with your own designs on the day. I'm loving the glorious jewel colours of Wendy's quilt which she collected this morning, this one's going to be so cosy to cuddle under in the coming cooler months! Backings with borders can give your longarmer's heart a bit of a workout, but this one behaved itself beautifully. Phew! My turnaround time for edge-to-edge quilting right now is 2 weeks. That's likely to get longer as we get closer to the festive season, so if you have those Covid quilt tops piling up now is th...e time to get them in! This is Eldora's beautiful quilt - it started off e2e but then I just kept seeing light custom. The quilt is called "Nautical Mystery", so those squares on point just begged to have anchors in them. So did you know that I also have Glide 40wt thread in the 1,000m spools? There are 45 colours on display here, and I might just have a few more squirrelled away somewhere. I can get any of the colours I don't have as a special order, they usually arrive in about a week. This thread is PERFECT for machine embroidery as well as quilting. This stunning quilt of Eldora's glows so much it cast it's own RAINBOW! I've never seen that before! You can't help but smile when you see this quilt, it's just fabulous - and Eldora chose to double-batt it with a layer of Hobbs 80/20 and a luscious layer of Hobbs wool, as she intends to snuggle under it in the cooler days to come. This is the latest Custom quilt off the frame and basking in the sunshine! Sharon used this "coin" applique pattern, highlighted with hand embroidered feather-stitch, to show off her beautiful collection of fabrics, and I wanted to make sure I further enhanced the appliques. I picked 7 different patterns for the FIFTY SIX circles, and rotated them through the rows. Those and the fan border were computerized and the swirly background was hand-guided.... Why yes, I did outline all of that print fabric in the borders and sashes! That and the pearls and curls behind the pieced flowers were hand-guided. The rest was done on my fabulous Gammill Statler. Betty Perkins had to unfortunately wait a long time to get back her stunning quilt, it was a victim of all of the happenings in my life over the last year. Once I was able to get to it I gave it heart and soul, and I hope she's as thrilled with it as I am! It's a mixture of computerized (thanks to my fabulous #Gammillstatler) and hand-guided. If you look very closely at the printed border and sashings the print is outlined in #habanddashglide in Khaki, which when it's stitc...hed looks like a pale metallic gold, without the hassle of dealing with a metallic thread! That outlining and the black pebbles and swirls are the hand guided bits. Had the best fun yesterday, I took a Zoom class with the lovely @tiacurtisquilts, organised by #okcmqg, Welsh Inspired Borders. Well, being Welsh born and bred, how could I pass on that one! Tia taught us from her home studio, each of us with our own sewing happy places around us, it felt extraordinarily personal. What a privelage to learn from a high-profile teacher, on my own machine (some of us on longarms, some on domestic machines), without worrying about whether I'd pa...cked everything! All hand-guided with rulers! Tia kept us interested and entertained, and once we all relaxed there were many giggles and we felt that we were among friends. The class gave us an insight into the history of Welsh quilting, and a good start on quilting some traditional Welsh patterns, which can have a very modern look! I for one will be putting in some practice, it's lots of fun! This new platform has made learning from the best teachers more accessible and affordable for us all, while I LOVE travelling to workshops normally, travel is not high on my agenda right now, and under normal circumstances I can only manage one or two workshops per year. Thise is going to open up such a range of opportunities! We had a fabulous, fun day, Jane got the hang of longarming after a fairly long break, and just look at that quilt! I'm in love with it! I believe her lovely husband is now minus a few shirts (well, Covid et al...) but I don't think he's going to mind for one moment!
