Commonly referred to as lazy eye, amblyopia is a neuro-developmental condition. In this condition one eye has inadequate eyesight despite being perfectly healthy. If left untreated, amblyopia can strongly impact children’s school work, sports, and the ability to make friends.
Just in time for back to school the Canadian Association of Optometrist has put together a brief quiz: Would you know if your child had a vision issue. Click on the link below to take the quiz! https://www.onlineexambuilder.com/september-2020/exam-381266

Did you know that behaviors such as avoiding near work, slow reading speeding, and getting easily distracted/frustrated with school work can actually be signs of a vision issue. Homeschooling can cause an increase in visual stress which can lead to these symptoms. Join Dr. Keep for a 30 minute webinar on May 2nd at 11:00 am for ways to make homeschooling easier by reducing visual stress. The zoom link is on the events page
It is pretty safe to say that social distancing has hit everyone. It has caused dramatic changes to our daily routines for adults and students alike. I understand the unprecedented challenges of having to home school children while also attempting to work remotely. While this can be overwhelming at times, it can also be an incredible opportunity to actually observe our children while they learn. Significant near work and computer work can be challenging for young students and... can put excess stress on their visual systems. Children who have visual symptoms may not always complain of blurry or double vision but will often display certain behaviors. These behaviors can actually be signs of visual stress and may include avoidance of near work, covering or closing an eye, holding material too close or far away, getting frustrated/distracted while performing school work, squirming in their chair and taking a long time to finish assignments. I will be hosting a free 30 minute webinar to discuss how these behaviors are connected to the eyes, and what changes you can make at home to improve them during the pandemic. Please feel free to share this link with anyone who you feel may have a child may benefit. We know a lot of our patients are front line workers and we want to say a HUGE thank you to you!! We appreciate everything all of our health care workers, grocery store clerks, teachers, delivery drivers and food workers are doing to help keep our community running!
We have all been spending extra time on the computer these days while working remotely and homeschooling. These long hours can often cause blurry vision, dry eye, and discomfort. If you are feeling increased discomfort from the increased computer time check out the video below on ways to prevent and treat Computer Vision Syndrome.
It is a pretty helpless feeling as a small business owner when you are mandated to close for an extended period of time. We wanted to ensure we used this time to continue to support our community. Check out the video below to see how Dr. Keep and her husband have been working to make it a little bit safer to receive emergency eye care during the COVID closures. https://edmonton.citynews.ca//593/SyxzIeNcgb/6149738930001
