As businesses reopen, it important not to underestimate the emotional and mental toll the last few months have taken on their staff. One positive that will come out of the current crisis for many businesses is the realization that they ‘can’ actually do things differently, because they’ve had to. It is now non-negotiable. For years, I have heard leaders and management teams saying, that would never work, we’ve always done it this way and that’s ridiculous. Well the ridiculous is now happening and it is working because it has too. The best example is the work from home requirement. Tough times don’t last. Tough people do. This is the ultimate test of your ability to lead. How a leader responds in situations like this shows their true colors. Communicate constantly with your employees with radical transparency and clarity. Even if you have nothing new to share, tell them that. They are looking to you to keep them informed. It helps. Note the biggest challenges cash flow, supply chain, resource planning & allocation and take advantage of this op...portunity to work ON improving your business processes, since many of us can’t work IN it. Engage your employees to brainstorm ways to save money and get through this time. They will help and have good ideas. Don’t get stuck dwelling in the current state. Start planning how to ramp up after this passes. That is something you can control. Then you can be ready to try to get back on track as fast as possible. See more

What a week it has been! As we all do what we can to cope over the next weeks and months, here are the best pieces of advice I have read for folks on a personal level: Breathe. Take a few very deep breathes. It slows everything down. Remember what you are grateful for each day (example: we are coming into spring at least, not heading into winter!) Find what you can control. It makes us feel better to have some control. We can control our attitude. We control our choices... to spread optimism and kindness or negativity and fear. Ensure you get outside walk the dog, go for a run. Clear your head. Only watch the news once or twice a day & stop scrolling. An update in the morning and evening and then walk away. See more
