It is hot here in the Lower Mainland, temperatures of 30 degrees plus. My dogs are chilling in the shade, and they are still hot. But I still see people walking their dogs in the middle of the day, when it is hot out. Please keep in mind that a dog's body temperature is 1-2 degrees higher than ours and they are not able to sweat to cool down. And they have a fur coat! This puts them at risk for heat stroke much faster and easier than a human. The best times of the day to walk your dog are early morning, or very late evening, when the temperatures are cooler. Please do not expose your dog to walks during the heat of the day. Risk of 1st and 2nd degree burns to their pads from walking on the concrete is also a huge risk.

Warning about raw meat diets: As you know, I am an advocate for raw fed diets for the majority of dogs and cats. I say majority, because not all animals have the ability to handle this diet due to previous health issues/medications which may have reduced their ability to digest this type of diet and not all animal guardians have the right environment to do this safely for their human families. Regardless, my post today is about my concern regarding imbalanced raw food diets.... There are a plethora of raw food diet companies out there now and many people are making their own raw food diets for their animals. While this is can be done, there is a definitely a 'formula' or 'recipe' which must be followed. The danger comes in when raw fed diets are lacking the necessary minerals and vitamins needed. Some commercial raw fed diets, especially the red meat ones made from beef or bison, do NOT contain bone or bone dust. This means the dog/cat is getting protein but no minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Lack of these minerals leads to severe metabolic problems including metabolic bone deficiency, heart problems, osteoporosis, just to name a few. These diseases are serious and can be irreversible and life threatening, and unfortunately we see these conditions happen with well meaning pet guardians who thought they were doing the best for their pet by buying meat from the grocery store and feeding it to their animal. It is not that simple. Feeding an imbalanced raw fed diet is highly dangerous and worse than feeding a kibble diet. So if you are feeding your cat/dog a raw food diet PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure it is a balanced diet containing not only meat, but also bone, organ and the appropriate amount of vegetables or vitamins. Please do not make your own diet if you do not have reliable reference material or guidance to do so.
