Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the VIU Foundation has been able to support students facing dire financial barriers to their education through the Vancouver Island University Emergency Bursary program. This program gives immediate support to students who need it right away. Sometimes, students may lose their job, have their hours reduced, encounter an unexpected expense like their car needing a repair, or experience any other loss of income that can mean them d...ropping out of school. There are significant ripple effects to dropping out of school to work, but ultimately it means it will take longer to attain their education and get better paying, more stable employment. In severe situations, they may never come back at all and remain stuck in a job they don't like or that doesn't allow them to make ends meet. We don't want to see that happen, and neither do our donors and community partners. This is demonstrated by the unprecedented $360k you've helped us raise so far in support of students affected financially by the pandemic. This is amazing and we are so grateful for your support! On December 1, 2020, people and organizations all over the world come together for Giving Tuesday to give back to our communities through donations and volunteerism. One of our key areas is Milner Gardens & Woodland, a 70-acre site including wooded forest and old estate in the heart of Qualicum. Milner boasts a beautiful tea house where visitors can enjoy traditional high tea, scenic walks through the massive old growth forest along the shoreline, an extensive food garden for... educational purposes, and an unrivaled rhododendron garden with over 500 individual species! As much of Milner Garden’s revenue is generated by visitors and events, closures due to COVID-19 have severely impacted the operation. You can help preserve this beautiful spot by supporting Milner Garden’s general operations. The Shoots with Roots program at Milner Gardens & Woodland introduces elementary school students to local ecosystems, gardening, and natural sciences while also creating opportunities for exploration and play in nature.
