Roxane Gay: a contemporary American, Black, queer writer. Her work sparks deep thought and conversation that may make you uncomfortable, but better for it. One of her most notable works, Bad Feminist (2014), put her on the map as a voice that questions culture, politics, and the current state of feminism. Since then, she has released a moving memoir (Hunger 2017), an exploration of rape culture (Not That Bad 2018), and other poignant works including an introduction to The Sel...ected Works of Audre Lorde (2020). Roxane Gay also writes for major publications; find Gay’s latest NY Times article about the future of the United States with a new Democratic government here: https://tinyurl.com/yxqbyenp Photo by EvaBlue on Flickr

Thank you, Sonnet L'Abbe, for lending your voice to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence video campaign organized by Vancouver Island Universit...y Faculty Association Status of Women and CFUW Nanaimo. Reading from Kai Cheng Thom's poem, "Trauma is Not Sacred," you remind us, "Beneath the skin of every history of trauma, there is a love poem waiting deep below." This video closes our video campaign for these 16 Days. Thank you to the 21 voices who participated. Today is Human Rights Day. We know there are still many voices to be heard. Let's be ready and awake to listen, lend a hand, step back so others can speak, learn, act, do. Let's be the change. Nanaimo Remembers is a unique video memorial project that aims to tell a piece of the story of the lives of the Nanaimo soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice... during the First and Second World Wars. It includes the names of more than 200 soldiers from the Dallas Square Cenotaph in downtown Nanaimo and a special section highlights the contributions of local Indigenous soldiers, thanks to research conducted by VIU Elder-in-Residence Geraldine Manson. Thank you for watching live with us, and taking a moment to remember the sacrifices of those soldiers. #lestweforget See more

The theme of this year’s #OAWeek is Open with Purpose - aiming to ensure that principles of equity and inclusion are central to the work of the OA community. We shine a spotlight on the Community Scholars program - while we work toward more greater openness in scholarly communication, this partnership among BC universities provides non-profits with access to paywalled resources from academic publishers.
